2. 1857 revolt
• Known as Indian mutiny or sepoy mutiny
• Widespread but unsuccessful rebellion against British rule in India
• Started in Meerut by Indian troops in service of British east India
company
• From Meerut the wave transported to Delhi, Agra and Kanpur
3. Reasons for the revolt
• DOCTRINE OF LAPSE – perpetrated by lord Dalhousie late
(1840s) prohibiting a Hindu ruler without natural heir from
adopting a successor and after the ruler died or abdicated
annexing his land.
• during his tenure as a governor general of India, 1848-56,
Lord Dalhousie made efforts emancipating women had
introduced a bill to remove all legal obstacles against
Widow’s remarriage
• Introduction of western methods of education was direct
challenge to orthodoxy to both Hindu and Muslim
• Mutiny broke out in Bengal army
• Sepoys had to bite of the ends of lubricant cartridge which
mixture of pig’s and cow’s lard, so it was an insult to both
muslim and Hindu
4. Case of Mangal Pandey
• Mangal Pandey in late March 1857, attacked British officers at military Garrison
in Barrackpore. He was arrested and executed by British in early April.
• Sepoys in April, who refused the enfield cartidges were given punishment for long prison
terms and jail time. this made other sepoys angry
• Their comrades rose on may 10 shot their british officers and marched to Delhi.
• Local garrison sepoy join with Meerut man , by nightfall , aged pensionary
Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah II had been nominally restored to power by
tulmutous soldiery,
• from Delhi to Northern India, in mutiny sepoys shot many British officer, murder
of women and children were happened which enraged the British officers,
hundred sepoys were killed and fired from cannons in a frenzy of British
vengeance
5. AFTERMATH
• East India company was abolished by direct rule of India by British government
• Due to financial crisis Caused by mutiny led to Re-organisation of Indian
administration
• Indian Army was extensively organised
• Due to new council 1861 was given an Indian nominated element – the education
and public works were still going on with a little bit interruption but finally it Got
diminished
• Insensitive British imposed social measures that affected Hindu society came to
an End
• Traditional society had made its attempt against alien influences
• The traditional structure of Indian society, began to break down and was
eventually suppressed by the westernised class system from which emerged
Middle class with heightened sense of Indian nationalism.
6. Awadh
• Northern portion of Uttar Pradesh state
• Awadh is situated in the heart of Indo Gangetic
plain
• Muslims invaders came to Awadh in 12th
century
• It became part of Mughal empire in 16th century
• In 1856 the British changed the name to “Oudh”
which greatly angered the Indians
