This document presents three estimates of excess mortality in India during the COVID-19 pandemic from January 2020 to June 2021. First, extrapolating state-level civil registration data suggests 3.4 million excess deaths. Second, applying international infection fatality rates to Indian seroprevalence surveys implies around 4 million excess deaths. Third, analyzing death data from a household survey of over 800,000 individuals yields an estimate of 4.9 million excess deaths. Each estimate has limitations but collectively suggest that actual COVID deaths are likely an order of magnitude greater than India's official count of 400,000. The household survey estimate is discussed in more detail, finding excess mortality from both the first and second waves of the pandemic.

The document summarizes the spread of COVID-19 from China to other countries in early 2020. It describes the symptoms and transmission of the virus, as well as control measures taken like travel restrictions. Analysis suggested the quarantine around Wuhan only modestly delayed spread within China. There were no specific antiviral treatments available yet. WHO is working to develop vaccines and coordinate the global response. Proper hygiene and social distancing are encouraged to slow transmission until a vaccine is found.

Not only India, but the entire world is experiencing a devastating wave of COVID-19. The spread of COVID-19 in India was initially characterized by fewer cases and lower case fatality rates compared with numbers in many developed countries, primarily due to a stringent lockdown and a demographic dividend. However, economic constraints forced a staggered lockdown exit strategy, resulting in a spike in COVID-19 cases. This factor, coupled with low spending on health as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP), created mayhem because of inadequate numbers of hospital beds and ventilators and a lack of medical personnel, especially in the public health sector. Nevertheless, technological advances, supported by a strong research base, helped contain the damage resulting from the pandemic. In the first ten days of May, India’s reported count of COVID-19 deaths was nearly 40,000, roughly accounting for a third of deaths worldwide during this period. The media ecosystem continues to be challenging this year – and that was before the pandemic. To inform the citizens during these uncertain times, newsrooms and media houses across the country have made pandemic coverage a priority. While there is an abundance of news to be reported on the global pandemic, the esteemed media houses of the country pointed out several other news trends to keep people educated and aware. for more info visit: https://www.iccpl.in

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in numerous positive environmental impacts due to reductions in human activity. In China, lockdowns led to a 25% reduction in carbon emissions and 50% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, saving an estimated 77,000 lives. However, the pandemic has also enabled illegal activities like deforestation and poaching. Additionally, heightened prejudice and xenophobia toward Chinese and East Asian people have been reported worldwide during the outbreak. Scientists have worked to disseminate COVID-19 research through open access publishing and preprint servers to share results quickly.

either "variant of interest" or "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization. A
variant of interest is one that has a higher rate of transmissibility and more acute illness,
such as higher rates of hospitalization or death
.
In its weekly epidemiological report on the pandemic, WHO named the B1617 variant,
which has several sub-lineages with significantly different characteristic mutations, as a
variant of significance. It was first discovered in India last October and was found in at
least 17 countries as of Tuesday, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and
Singapore
.
According to the study, the B1617 version is circulating in India alongside other
concerning variants, as well as variant B1618, which has been identified in some states.
According to the WHO, these versions may all be contributing to the latest revival

The Indian government is under fire for allowing huge crowds to assemble in different
parts of the country for religious festivals and election rallies, often without masks
.
According to Akhil Bery, a South Asia analyst at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group,
last year's better-than-expected treatment of the first wave led to complacency in the
political elite, and subsequent questionable decisions added to the boom
.
Bery mentioned the government's decision to allow the weeks-long "Kumbh Mela"
religious festival to take place, which saw hundreds of thousands of people reportedly
take a dip in the Ganges river. That, he said, became a mega spreader affair, as did
election rallies in the eastern state of West Bengal hosted by various parties, including
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party
.
“
There have been some dubious decision-making here, and this is a major political
problem for Modi, at least in the short term,” Bery said on CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia"
on Wednesday
.
“
There was a general expectation that India's health-care infrastructure would fail after
last year's boom. “This led to a sense of complacency within the political class, within
citizens... but, essentially, that complacency turned into this mindset, and now we're
seeing the end effects of that,” he said, adding, “This led to a sense of complacency
within the political class, within people... but, ultimately, that complacency fed into this
mentality, and now we're seeing the results of that
”.
