10. Recommendation to…?
• To those who have read ‘And Then There
Were None’
• Difference?
– Inspector Craddock / detective Miss Marple
or Hercule Poirot
To begin with, how many people in this room DO NOT know Agatha Christie? Alright. Then Can you guys tell me any of books or stories she had written? Yes, not only the books you have mentioned, there are more books or novels she had written including ~
Among her books, the book I would like to introduce today is ‘A Murder is Announced.’
Agatha Christie was born in 1890. She first tried writing detective fiction while working in a hospital during World War I, creating the detective Hercule Poirot in her debut novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles. She achieved wide popularity with the appearance of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd in 1926 and produced a total of 80 novels and short-story collections over six decades. In her novels, there are usually two detectives, either Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple.
This book, A Murder is Announced, is Miss Marple’s mystery and also the 50th book of Agatha Christie. The story begins with the announcement of murder on local newspaper, the North Benham News and Chipping Cleghorn Gazette, simply known as Gazette. Those who have read this announcement consider it as a party or murder game, so they visit the Little Paddocks where the REAL murder happens.
So, before starting my activity, have you guys heard about a murder game? (make them guess what it is) A murder game is really similar to Mafia game. You guys all know what Mafia game is right? So, in murder game, a person who murders and a victim are set in advance. Later on, a victim is murdered and the people find out who’s the murderer by making a guess with the situation.
The reason why I asked you about it is that the murder in the book just happens during the murder game. The murderer just set all things in advance in order to kill somebody by putting announcement on newspaper so that all neighbors come to the Little Paddocks where murder occurs.
So, for my project of this book, I’m going to play a Mafia game with you. The reason why I’m not doing a murder game is that it takes much longer time and the rule is quite complex compared to the mafia game. So, you all know the rule right? Actually, there should be townspeople, Mafia, sheriff (an innocent who can detect mafia members), and nurse (an innocent who can protect other innocents from attack). But I’ll change the rules a little so that we can make it simple. First, I’ll poke two people as Mafias and then 2 police.
Well done. Was it fun?
OK. So did you find out any common characteristics of victims and mafias?
Anyone?
OK. So for the victims, they somewhat knew who murderer was and their guess was right. (did you notice that Rasup, Fhangam, and Nik kept telling me that they thought mafias were David or Sang ho)
What about mafias?
They pretended to be a victim even though they were mafias (did you notice that when I asked all people ‘who do you think is murdered?,’ David and SangHo said that they might be killed)
Those two characteristics I’ve told you are the most remarkable in the book, ‘A Murder is Announced’
In the book, the murderer kills not only one but also more because others kind of know who the murderer is in the book. So, during our mafia game, some townspeople kind of knew who the mafias were. So, mafias killed them.
So, if you’re willing to read this book, these could be (not really) keys to find out who the murderer is
So, I recommend this book especially to those who have read ‘And Then There Were None’ or other books of Agatha Christie. The reason why I recommend it to the readers of ‘And Then There Were None’ is that these two books are quite different even though they were written by the same author. In most books of Agatha Christie, there is not only inspector Craddock but also either Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot. However, in ‘And Then There Were None’ there is none of them and the characters in the book try to solve the problem by themselves. So, if you have read this book, I want you to read ‘A Murder is Announced’ so that you can compare these two books.
