4. 5G Pilot Testbeds
 Broadway is a proud member of two 5G consortia:
Cisco/Strathclyde-led RuralFirst, and 5Grit
 Both focused on delivering 5G benefits for the neglected
rural markets
 Wide range of specialist partners within each
consortium:
 Industrial and agricultural IoT, tourism, rural connectivity
 Broadway’s focus:
 Testing the limits of TVWS and spectrum-sharing,
delivering NGA
 Developing – and articulating – innovative commercial
models

 FTIR is an important break from the past…
 Mostly incremental proposals, but still good ‘barrier busting’ stuff
 But other more radical proposals:
 A shift to an ‘outside in’ approach
 Recognising ‘hybrid fibre/wireless’ as a key element in the ‘first 10%’
 Copper switch-off
 These change the game!
 £3bn-£5bn ‘from whatever source’ for the ‘first 10%’
 So, how does that work?
