God created the heavens and earth over 4.5 billion years ago, though initially the earth was formless and empty with darkness covering the deep. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters, and God commanded light to exist, beginning the process of making the planet habitable through subsequent creative acts. Further research is still ongoing into the early formation and conditions of the earth and universe.
