The Foundation is a member of the Aga Khan Development Network – one of the world’s leading poverty solutions networks.
His Highness the Aga Khan is founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the world’s leading poverty solutions networks.
His Highness the Aga Khan has a deep commitment to improving the quality of life for all. This means helping people unlock their own promise to meet the needs of their families and pursue their own goals and dreams.
Addressing the challenges of poverty takes time and investment which is why Aga Khan Development Network has been building lasting institutions like schools and hospitals for over 50 years.
Before Ms. Mary Andrew Kopulo started the Vilwakwe Children’s Center, the nearest public school was two miles away. Using the whole school approach—introduced by EMACK—the school not only thrived, it grew. The community strongly supported the school even though there were few resources to do so. Most of these informal settlements do not have electricity, basic sanitation or paved roads. Parents got involved by discussing the best ways to improve school and student performance with teachers and plans were revised to make reading the priority.
The school enrolls over 300 students today and has had two classes complete the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education. Since 2006, the EMACK program has extended and improved school opportunities in more than 500,000 children in 935 pre-primary and primary schools.
The Foundation hosts many events in the United States to raise awareness of global development and the Foundation’s work, and to raise funds that support its programs. Some of these events, such as walks and golf tournaments, formerly called Partnership Walk and Partnership Golf, will continue in major cities across the country. They are now known as Aga Khan Foundation Walk and Golf so that the Foundation’s name can be better known by the people who support us. Learn more about our events: http://akfusa.crowdsterapp.com/
These events inspire and inform Americans about the power of global partnerships – partnerships that transcend borders, religions, gender, origins and age.
At each event thousands of people take part in fun activities and learn how they can make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.
Through volunteering, awareness-raising and contributions, people of all ages and backgrounds partner with the Aga Khan Foundation to advance human dignity and peace around the globe.
