Web-based platforms are heavily used in many educational settings. While this is a very useful item for students, these platforms might not be assessable to those with disabilities. Becoming compliant to the governing guidelines is important in creating accessibility for all students who interact with the platform.

What was discussed in response.....
The juvenile justice system has substantially grown and changes since the late 1890s when the first juvenile court was established in Illinois, United States of America. The court process was informal during those days. These juvenile courts provided a probation system as well as apply a separate service delivery which provides adolescents and children with guidance, education and supervision. In 1967, the Supreme Court of the U.S said that Constitution states that those in juvenile have got many of the similar rights guaranteed to the adults who are suspects of crimes. These includes the right to confront those witnesses who are against them and right to an attorney. The court has the youth the constitutional rights to have their trials which require proof beyond reasonable doubt. The court also gave them a right beyond double jeopardy (McCord, 2014).
Today. Some changes have taken place in the juvenile justice system. Developmental psychology has been emphasized on and enriched in the juvenile justice system today. This is in the way adolescent brain which is still development differs for adult brains. Juvenile courts nowadays consider whether a child or an adolescent is competent to stand the trial or if his/her confession was voluntary with consideration of developmental as well as scientific research about distinctive characteristics of adolescents and children. Juvenile courts are now putting more emphasis on education and training of these children which plays a very important role in their rehabilitation and change of behavior (Krisberg, 2012).
These changes are good because these children are acquiring very important skills. Education and training are providing them with skills which are very transformative. Most of them are getting out entirely different than they were when joining juvenile justice systems. We can, therefore, say that a lot of improvements have taken place since they kicked off.

Great response. It is well thought out and supported.
You make a point that we have started guaranteeing some of the same rights to juveniles that we do to adults. What rights carry down to juveniles and what rights donut? There are still a few, pretty major ones actually, that don't apply to juveniles.

The Legal Year in Review: Digital Access Cases3Play Media
While every year is active in the federal and state courts, 2015 saw several cases focused on the accessibility of online content. These cases demonstrate that the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Office for Civil Rights (OCR) are taking a more comprehensive position on digital access, and organizations across industries should take note of the precedents being set to better understand their legal obligations.
In this webinar, Paul Grossman, who served as the OCR Chief Regional Attorney in San Francisco for 30 years, will analyze key illustrative cases and decisions in 2015 that have potential impact on campus and organization policies, practices, and environments as they relate to web accessibility.
This presentation will cover:
- Legal requirements impacting web accessibility
- What is a "public accommodation" subject to Title III of the ADA?
- Captioning lawsuit against Harvard and MIT
- Cases of "deliberate indifference"
- Key DOJ/OCR compliance reviews in 2015
- Accommodating employees
- The legal horizon for web accessibility

Accessibility of Public Spaces: Case Study of Ikeja, Lagos State, Nigeriainventionjournals
T: This article is about people with different capabilities. It engages with the theoretical framework of the social model of disability about how disability and ageing issues should be considered. In doing so it pays particular attention to the accessibility of the built environment. Disability will affect the lives of everyone at some point in their life, it is time society change to acknowledge this, with the ageing population and the prevailing increases in the number of the physically disabled people, public building, community design and other environmental barriers must be re-examined. Owing to this basic knowledge that the scholars and newspaper world regards "the aged" and "the disabled" as if they are discrete groups outside the common present thought of the society, it is therefore needed to understand that ageing and disabilities is a stage in life that people will experience at one point or the other of their life. The research work inquiries into the prominent demands for accessible built environment to carter for the population growth of the senior citizen and the disabled people.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Joan has 20/20 vision, (she only wears those glasses for fashion), and she hears perfectly fine, Jill has 20/200 vision, which is considered legally blind and her hearing is fine. Jane has 20/20 vision as well, but she was born without her cochlear nerves which classifies her as deaf. All three friends are enrolled in the same econ class and are required to go do their reading on a web platform
They all go home to log onto their textbook platform and here is what they see. Joan and Jane see everything just fine and are able to log in right away. Since Jill is legally blind, she has extremely limited view, She wears glasses but they don’t always help her. It takes her awhile to even log on
Now they are all on the platform, they come to the introductory video for their econ book. While they all can all see figures and follow the video, Joan has no problem following the video. While Jill can’t fully see, she can hear everything and follow the lesson as well. Jane however can’t hear the video. All she sees are people talking and she can’t follow the video.
Because of Jill and Jane’s disabilities, their grades are greatly affected. Joan is furious and finds the situation unfair. Unfortunately they aren’t alone.
Roughly 11 percent of college students are reported to have a disability. While that percentage is low, thats coming from approximately 2.5 million students. Thats 200,00 students with disabilities. Fortunately, there are some laws in place to help these students
A law that protect people with disabilities is the ADA act of 1990
Title I - Equal employment opportunity for individuals with disabilities
Title II - Nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in state and local govt. services
Covers state funded schools such as universities, community colleges and vocational schools
Financial aid services
Title III - Nondiscrimination on the basis of disability by public accommodations and in commercial facilities
Covers private colleges, and vocational schools
Title IV - Requires telephone and internet companies to provide TRS to allow individuals with hearing and speech disabilities to communicate over the telephone via keyboard and assistive device.
On January 9, 2017, the section 508 guideline 'refresh' was completed, updating the specifications to include WCAG 2.0 and PDF/UA
WCAG - Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
PDF/UA - PDF Universal Accessibility - the international standard for accessible PDF technology
Here is a real life example of an individual with a disability
At the end of the video, one of the reasons why i choose this video was that it shows why accessibility is important to the team of panOpen
Nightingale, a blind mother of three Seattle students, filed a lawsuit in 2014 because she did not have equal/proper access to information on the district’s websites and a math program.
She originally brought the issue to the attention of Seattle schools in 2012, according to a briefing for the school board on the issue. The district’s website provider indicated that it could not fully resolve the issues.
The NAD cited violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act in the university's’ failure to provide appropriately accurate and comprehensive captioning for online course materials.
At this point, you might be asking “why is accessibility important for us?”. We aren't expert when it comes to creating features for the platform, but we summarized that the process comes down to this. An ideation phase, that leads to brainstorming, prototyping, more development which leads to a launch and bug fixes. But then after that, we run into an issue of accessibility. Jill and Jane can’t use some of these features.
Because of that, this entire timeline becomes a cycle until another accessibility issues pops back up and the cycle continues. This process is not the most efficient and all of the cycling can take up a lot of valuable company time.
With accessibility in mind from the beginning, we can cut the cycle and create into a new gold standard. While the ideation stage might take longer,
will not only lead to the success of Jill, Joan, and Jane. But for everyone. (add slide for what we did, why panopen is
