Agenda
AIMS WHAT HOW CHALLENGES OUTCOMES
Aims
• Enhance user discovery of full-text fee
based collections and open access articles
• Encourage greater use of fee based
collections, enhancing value for money
• Encourage greater use of open access
resources
• Demonstrate how incremental, continuous
improvement can support organisational
strategic goals
What
LibKey Discovery:
• Is a service from Third Iron, designed to enhance and streamline
access to library resources
• LibKey Discovery integrates LibKey into Library Search to provide one-
click access to the full text of library-licensed and open access articles.
When you find an article in Library Search for which full text is
available through subscriptions, you will see a Download Now link.
• One-click access to PDF documents, links to article in context and
journal cover images from the Discovery results
PRIMO VE:
• Ex Libris’ discovery solution, providing a single interface for patrons
to search across library collections
How
Implementation Process included
• Liaising with ThirdIron on implementation process.
They provide a script that is then added in to the
current customization package on PRIMO VE.
• Some modifications may need to be made i.e. if you
have a chat box already installed in to your PRIMO VE
customisation
• When the script is successfully installed the LibKey
discovery installation in PRIMO VE appears like this:
Challenges
• We needed to close the loop on records that LibKey discovery
could not provide access to.
• As we do not have document supply activated in our instance
of ALMA/Primo VE, if LibKey discovery could not provide
access to a resource the student would face a dead end with
their search.
• We had to resolve this. I created a rule under ‘general
electronic services’ but as we had holds activated as a rule the
‘request’ link for holds would appear on items that weren’t
available. After much investigation and calls with Ex Libris we
created a normalisation rule which provided a work around
for this. If LibKey discovery cannot provide access to a record
a link to our document supply form now appears.

Editor's Notes

  • #8 Comparing the 12 months since LibKey go live to the 12 months previous to go live, we see large differences in total full text downloads across all Third Iron Products – 153% increase in the 12 months since LibKey go live
  • #9 Layering in the LibKey FullText downloads we can see LibKey downloads account for 66% of total full text downloads in Third Iron products used by RCSI. L
  • #12 Working day = 7 hours 1240/7 = 177 working days
  • #13 presenter notes - enhancing discoverability and ease of access to full text context supports learners and provides a positive student experience of our services; as demonstrated the feature reduces researcher time looking for full text content, supports our open access agenda by enhancing discoverability of OA content; and the project as a continuous improvement project, links in with our sustainable infrastructure goals)
  • #14 Working day = 7 hours 1240/7 = 177 working days
