Labor, one of the largest and
most influential of the unions.
The first two New York City
Labor Days took place on the
5th of September, but in 1884,
the third annual New York
City Labor Day holiday was
scheduled for the first Monday
in September, and that date
stuck.
Canada, Australia, New
Zealand and the Netherlands
also celebrate Labour Day
on different dates; though
that has to do with how the
holiday originated in those
countries. This day has long
been a focal point for
commemorating the
achievements of the labor
movement.
the American Federation of
Labor passed a resolution
that "eight hours shall
constitute a legal day's labor
from and after 1st May,
1886". By 1886 around
250,000 workers were
involved in the eight-hour
Day movement. On 1st May,
1886 several labour unions
across the US went on
strike, demanding a standard
eight hours of workday.
On 4th May there was
bloodshed in Chicago's
Haymarket, a bomb was
thrown by a revolutionist
led to the deaths of a dozen
of people and the injury of
over 100 people. Five years
later this day is recognized
as a holiday by a socialist
organization.
The practice of holding
annual festivities to celebrate
workers spread across the
country, but Labor Day
didn’t become a national
holiday for more than a
decade. Oregon became the
first state to declare it a
holiday in 1887, and
states like New York,
Massachusetts and
Colorado soon followed
suit. Under President
Grover Cleveland, and
despite growing awareness
of the labor movement, the
first Monday in September
became a national holiday in
1896. Labor union leaders
in the United States had
pushed for a September
date for the New York
demonstration, which
coincided with a conference

Follow your dream!
Labor Day is a public holiday
which is held to pay homage
to the working people. It is a
federal holiday. All offices in
the government, schools and
organizations and many
businesses are closed. Some
public celebrations, such as
fireworks displays, picnics
and barbecues, are
organized, however, they are
not as grand as New Year or
July 1st. For many teams, it is
the start of the football
season. Since it is the last
chance for many people to
take summer trips, there
may be some congestion
on highways and at
airports. Public transit
systems do not usually
operate on their regular
timetables.
This holiday has the story of
violence and celebration that
is deeply embedded in the
history of the American
labor movement. It has
spread around the world
in different forms,but it is
distinctly American.
It originated from the United
States labor union movement
in the late 19th Century,
particularly the eight-hour
day movement, which
advocated eight hours for
work per day. In Late
nineteenth century the
working conditions were
severe and unsafe. Working
people had to work 12-16
hours per day. In 1884 the
FOLTU (Federation of
Organized Trades and
Labor Unions) which later

Philippines is known for its
different colorful and amazing
festivals that are celebrated by
Filipinos all over the country
every year in honor of their
Patron Saint or as a celebration
of the Glorious Day. One of this
festivals is called “May Flower
Festival” in Spanish “Flores De
Mayo” which falls in the month
of May to pay tribute to the
Virgin Mary. It is believed that
during this month, in the
tropical islands of the
Philippines, the fragrance of
flowers float in the air. When
the rain begins to pour after a
long period of dryness, the
flowers bloom, and as
predominantly Catholics,
Filipinos celebrate the grace of
rain by giving praise to the
Blessed Virgin Mary. The
townfolks are busy collecting
colorful flowers to decorate the
church’s altar and aisles.
There are different activities
done to celebrate this festival.
First of all, everyday in May,
people gather in the church to
pray the rosary, and the
children walk with their freshly-
cut flowers in the aisle while
sprinkling petals from their
basket and singing the hymn of
Lady Immaculate. Another way
of celebrating it is the what we
called “Sagala” or
“Santacruzan” held on the last
day of “Flores de Mayo” in
honor of Helena
Constantinople, locally known
as “Reyna Elena” and
Constantine The Great’s
Mayflower Festival

search for the true cross in
Jerusalem. This is the Religious-
Historical beauty pageant that
beautiful young Filipinas are
selected to join the colorful
parade. The stars are selected
not only by their looks alone
but for their embodiment of
traditional feminine qualities.
This is a week-long street
pageant in almost every town of
the Philippines, ranging from the
barrio to the metropolis
honoring the Philippine’s
beautiful young ladies and their
handsome escorts as they walk
down the street under the hand
-maid bamboo arcs decorated
with fragrant colorful native
flowers. This colorful pageant
parade is arranged in order, and
“Reyna Elena” is the last in line,
since she is the highlight of the
procession, the legendary
founder of the true Cross,
represented by the small cross
she carries and escorted by her
son, Constantine, under a huge
canopy of May Flowers. Behind
her is the float carrying the
image of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, followed by a brass band
that lends the festive sounds to
the procession. As the pageant
moves along the street,
devotees holding lit candles
follow, and join in the rosary,
novena and song of praise.
This festival “May Flower
Festival’’, was introduced by the
Spaniards in the Philippines and
has since become a part of
Filipino tradition recognized
with youth, love and romance.

month, the

flowers float in

How to Write Well
On the other hand, William Safire came up with this
set of rules on how to attain effective writing:
1. Parenthetical words however must be enclosed in
commas.
2. It behooves you to avoid archaic expressions.
3. Avoid archaeic spellings too.
4. Don't repeat yourself, or say again what you have said
before.
5. Don't use commas, that, are not, necessary.
6. Do not use hyperbole; not one in a million can do it
effectively.
7. Never use a big word when a diminutive alternative would
suffice.

According to Frank L. Visco, one can achieve good writing by following and remembering this set of rules:
(This was actually and originally published in the June 1986 issue of Writers' Digest.)
13. Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than
necessary; it’s highly superfluous.
14. Profanity sucks.
15. Be more or less specific.
16. Understatement is always best.
17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than
understatement.
18. One word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be avoided.
21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid
colloquialisms.
22. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
23. Who needs rhetorical questions?
1. Avoid Alliteration. Always.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They’re old hat.)
4. Employ the vernacular.
5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are
unnecessary.
7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
8. Contractions aren’t necessary.
9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
10. One should never generalize.
11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once
said, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.”
12. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
8. Subject and verb always has to agree.
9. Placing a comma between subject and predicate, is not
correct.
10. Use youre spell chekker to avoid mispeling and to catch
typograhpical errers.
11. Don't repeat yourself, or say again what you have said
before.
12. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its
not needed.
13. Don't never use no double negatives.
14. Poofread carefully to see if you any words out.
15. Hopefully, you will use words correctly, irregardless of how
others use them.
16. Eschew obfuscation.
17. No sentence fragments.
18. Don't indulge in sesquipedalian lexicological constructions.
19. A writer must not shift your point of view.
20. Don't overuse exclamation marks!!
21. Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long
sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.
22. Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
23. If any word is improper at the end of a sentence, a
linking verb is.
24. Avoid trendy locutions that sound flaky.
25. Everyone should be careful to use a singular pronoun
with singular nouns in their writing.
26. Always pick on the correct idiom.
27. The adverb always follows the verb.
28. Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.
29. If you reread your work, you can find on rereading a
great deal of repetition can be by rereading and editing.
30. And always be sure to finish what you have started

We ask: If you were given a chance to study in your next life, what
course would you take up and why?
If I were given a chance to study, I want to
take up Journalism. I am interested in
enduring my thoughts about society,
problems in the community and changes in
nature. I want to express my ideas about
political and environmental issues, crimes
and any problems in the community . I want
to help people who don’t
have the freedom and
opportunity to express
their feelings agains the
government. Through my
writings, they can have the
courage and be motivated
to fight against their fears.

I would take course in Phonics. My spelling is very
bad. How to pronounce correctly is most important
for me. Even though I sometimesknow how to
pronounce worlds, I cannot spell the word.
Especially when I read an
essay, I can’t make sounds
easily

“I would definitely take up
Medicine. As my family members
get older, I have seen the need of
a doctor in the family. There;s a
huge advantage if you
have one. It’s hard to
be sick, much harder
if you lack financial
aid.”
-Mary Annabelle Lopez

If I were given a chance, I would take up Medicine
specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. I am a
woman; therefore, I should also care for those

  • 1. 1 Labor, one of the largest and most influential of the unions. The first two New York City Labor Days took place on the 5th of September, but in 1884, the third annual New York City Labor Day holiday was scheduled for the first Monday in September, and that date stuck. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands also celebrate Labour Day on different dates; though that has to do with how the holiday originated in those countries. This day has long been a focal point for commemorating the achievements of the labor movement. the American Federation of Labor passed a resolution that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after 1st May, 1886". By 1886 around 250,000 workers were involved in the eight-hour Day movement. On 1st May, 1886 several labour unions across the US went on strike, demanding a standard eight hours of workday. On 4th May there was bloodshed in Chicago's Haymarket, a bomb was thrown by a revolutionist led to the deaths of a dozen of people and the injury of over 100 people. Five years later this day is recognized as a holiday by a socialist organization. The practice of holding annual festivities to celebrate workers spread across the country, but Labor Day didn’t become a national holiday for more than a decade. Oregon became the first state to declare it a holiday in 1887, and states like New York, Massachusetts and Colorado soon followed suit. Under President Grover Cleveland, and despite growing awareness of the labor movement, the first Monday in September became a national holiday in 1896. Labor union leaders in the United States had pushed for a September date for the New York demonstration, which coincided with a conference in the city of the Knights of History of Labor Day ILOILO DREAM ENGLISH ACADEMY The Oracle Holidays in May— June May 1—Labor’s Day May 16—Lailatul Isra Wal June 12—Independence Day June 21—June Solstice July 19—Eidul—Fitar Inside this issue: History of Labor Day 1 Mayflower Festival 2 How to Write Well 3 We ask: If you were given a chance to study in your next life, what course would you take up and why? 4 Follow your dream! Labor Day is a public holiday which is held to pay homage to the working people. It is a federal holiday. All offices in the government, schools and organizations and many businesses are closed. Some public celebrations, such as fireworks displays, picnics and barbecues, are organized, however, they are not as grand as New Year or July 1st. For many teams, it is the start of the football season. Since it is the last chance for many people to take summer trips, there may be some congestion on highways and at airports. Public transit systems do not usually operate on their regular timetables. This holiday has the story of violence and celebration that is deeply embedded in the history of the American labor movement. It has spread around the world in different forms, but it is distinctly American. It originated from the United States labor union movement in the late 19th Century, particularly the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work per day. In Late nineteenth century the working conditions were severe and unsafe. Working people had to work 12-16 hours per day. • 2. 2 Philippines is known for its different colorful and amazing festivals that are celebrated by Filipinos all over the country every year in honor of their Patron Saint or as a celebration of the Glorious Day. One of this festivals is called “May Flower Festival” in Spanish “Flores De Mayo” which falls in the month of May to pay tribute to the Virgin Mary. It is believed that during this month, in the tropical islands of the Philippines, the fragrance of flowers float in the air. When the rain begins to pour after a long period of dryness, the flowers bloom, and as predominantly Catholics, Filipinos celebrate the grace of rain by giving praise to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The townfolks are busy collecting colorful flowers to decorate the church’s altar and aisles. There are different activities done to celebrate this festival. First of all, everyday in May, people gather in the church to pray the rosary, and the children walk with their freshly- cut flowers in the aisle while sprinkling petals from their basket and singing the hymn of Lady Immaculate. Another way of celebrating it is the what we called “Sagala” or “Santacruzan” held on the last day of “Flores de Mayo” in honor of Helena Constantinople, locally known as “Reyna Elena” and Constantine The Great’s Mayflower Festival “...selected not only by their looks, but their embodiment of traditional feminine qualities.” Page 2 The Oracle search for the true cross in Jerusalem. This is the Religious- Historical beauty pageant that beautiful young Filipinas are selected to join the colorful parade. The stars are selected not only by their looks alone but for their embodiment of traditional feminine qualities. This is a week-long street pageant in almost every town of the Philippines, ranging from the barrio to the metropolis honoring the Philippine’s beautiful young ladies and their handsome escorts as they walk down the street under the hand -maid bamboo arcs decorated with fragrant colorful native flowers. This colorful pageant parade is arranged in order, and “Reyna Elena” is the last in line, since she is the highlight of the procession, the legendary founder of the true Cross, represented by the small cross she carries and escorted by her son, Constantine, under a huge canopy of May Flowers. Behind her is the float carrying the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, followed by a brass band that lends the festive sounds to the procession. As the pageant moves along the street, devotees holding lit candles follow, and join in the rosary, novena and song of praise. This festival “May Flower Festival’’, was introduced by the Spaniards in the Philippines and has since become a part of Filipino tradition recognized with youth, love and romance. “..during this month, the fragrance of flowers float in the air.” Photo Credits: https://angbagongfilipino.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/sagala-9.jpg https://angbagongfilipino.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/sagala-5.jpg http://filipinopastoralministry.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/IMG_5235-2.jpg
