Difference between
wired & wireless
media
5. Network media
● In order to allow communication between
devices, a way to connect them with each
other must be needed.
● Network media refers to the communication
channels used to interconnect nodes on a
computer network.
● Devices can be connected using wires, known
as wired or guided or bounded media.
● Devices can also connected using
electromagnetic waves, known as wireless or
unguided or unbounded media.
6. Wired media
● Also known as guided media.
● This is considered most stable type of
communication and better than wireless.
● Wire is used to transfer data from
source to
destination.
● It is better for professional purposes
than public.
7. wireless media
● Also known as unguided media.
● Wireless media carry electromagnetic
signals that represent the binary digits
of data communications using
microwave and radiowave
frequencies.
● It is not restricted to conductors or
pathways and provide greatest
mobility options of all media.
● In wireless transmission space is the
medium.
8. Advantages
• More reliable and less susceptible.
• Higher data transfer rates.
• Enhanced security.
• Grester mobility and flexibility.
• Easy installation and scalability.
• Convenient for PANs and mobile.

10. Example of wired
media
DSL- Digital Subscriber Line:
● It is a family of technologies that
provides high speed internet access.
● Transmit data over copper telephone
lines.
● There are 3 forms of DSL
a. ADSL- Asymmetric DSL
b. SDSL- Symmetric DSL
c. VDSL- Very High Bitrate
DSL
11. How it works
● DSL operates by utilizing the frequency
spectrum of standard telephone lines.
● DSL modem at both ends of the
connection enables the conversion of
digital data from computer into
electrical signals.
13. Example of wireless
media
Wi-Fi:
● It is wireless locak area network
(WLAN) technology for linking
computers and other electronic
devices .
● It uses radio frequencies to send and
receive data.
● It allow users to connect to the
internet at high speed.
14. BLUETOOTH
● It is short range wireless communication
technology.
● It facilitatates connections between
devices such as, smart phones,
headphones, speakers, scanners,
digital cameras and printers.
● It operates in 2.4 GHz frequency range.
15. Infrared
● It uses infrared light for
wireless communication
between devices.
● It used to serve the same
purpose as Bluetooth.
● IR requires a direct light of
sight between communicating
devices.
16. Zigbee
● Zigbee is a low power short range
wireless communication.
● Commonly used home
automation, industrial control and
sensor network.
● It is designed for low data rates
and efficient power consumption.
18. Difference between wired and
wireless media
Wired media Wireless media
• Requires physical cables for
connections.
• Limited mobility.
• Less susceptible to interference.
• Complex installation and
maintenance needs managing of
cables.
• Higher data transfer speed.
• More secure.
• Utilizes electromagnetic signals for
connections.
• Greater mobility.
• Experience interference.
• Easier installation and maintenance
involves addressing potential
wireless issues.
• Speed can be affected.
• Requires additional security
measures.
19. Difference between wired and wireless
media
WIRED MEDIA

WIRELESS MEDIA
● Utilizes electromagnetic signals for
connections.
● Greater mobility.
● Experience interference.
● Easier installation and maintenance
involves addressing potential wireless
issues.
● Speed can be affected.
● Requires additional security
measures.
