Senator Mike Crapo, Senator Jim Risch, and Congressman Raul Labrador honored 30 recipients of the Congressional Award in Boise, Idaho for dedicating hundreds of hours to community service. The event was sponsored by Micron Technology and highlighted the Congressional Award as Congress's highest honor for youth recognizing over 780 of Idaho's youth for over 250,000 hours of community service. The Congressional Award is a non-competitive program established by Congress in 1979 to encourage participants ages 14-23 to set and achieve personal goals in community service, personal development, and citizenship.

Across the country, resident-led institutions and their allies continue to build organizing strategies that address housing, displacement, and gentrification at the local, regional, and state level. Strategies and solutions to gentrification and displacement like rent control measures, passing local ballot initiatives for renter protections, developing community land trusts, and financing affordable housing has had some success, but the demographics of many communities are still rapidly changing.
At the center of these shifts, philanthropy continues to play a critical role investing in expanding the power of low-income communities to build local decision-making. How will federal level changes exacerbate challenges at the city-level? How are community groups connecting to other local challenges? What are some of the strategies emerging in 2017 that teams are working on to address the housing crisis?

BNL Jan 20 Meeting Minutes
The January 13, 2020 meeting minutes of the BNL Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. were presented and accepted. The Treasurer's report showed a beginning balance of $52,205.12 and ending balance of $55,776.59. Upcoming events discussed included the MLK Parade on January 18th, Alpha Academy college tours to Winston Salem State University and Wake Forest University on January 25th, and a Mental Health Awareness event on February 8th. The Membership committee reported 46 men attended the December informational and upcoming intake meetings in Raleigh and Charlotte. The Political Action committee discussed North Carolina voter registration requirements and importance of voter participation.

The announcement lists over 100 endorsed candidates for federal, state, and county offices across Hawaii, including many incumbents. It also lists some races as "open" or "no endorsement" where no candidate was suitable.

Edwina Clanton founded East Metro Brokers Real Estate Company three years ago and has seen sales increases each year. She has experience in new construction, commercial and residential land, residential resale, and working with real estate investors. Edwina is very active in her professional organizations where she holds several leadership positions and received an award for outstanding sales performance. She serves in leadership roles for multiple civic organizations in her community.

Kalamazoo, Michigan was named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People, an annual award coordinated by America's Promise that recognizes communities' efforts to support youth. Kalamazoo stood out for programs like the Kalamazoo Promise - a scholarship program that provides tuition assistance to graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools. The application also highlighted various youth mentoring groups in the community and initiatives aimed at addressing the greatest needs, particularly for young boys. Commissioner Miller led the effort to compile Kalamazoo's application, bringing together information from many community partners, and was praised for her work organizing the successful submission.

Turnout was higher than average at 38.5%. Shaw said he ran to provide an alternative to Reyering, citing concerns about her subjectivity from her time on the Architectural and Site Review Board. Reyering said she was proud of her campaign and experience could benefit the town council.

This event highlighted Congress’s highest honor for youth and recognized individuals that have dedicated hundreds of hours of service in their communities. State Treasurer was also in attendance to recognize this year’s medalists. Mr. Jason Sears, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters in Idaho, delivered the keynote address, which highlighted the importance of incorporating service into all aspects of life, including business. No stranger to serving others, Mr. Sears’ career has demonstrated his commitment to community engagement; Mr. Sears previously served as a communications and technology volunteer with the US Peace Corps in Namibia and held director level positions at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Ada County.
