Couples presenting to the infertility clinic- Do they really have infertility...Sujoy Dasgupta
Dr Sujoy Dasgupta presented the study on "Couples presenting to the infertility clinic- Do they really have infertility? – The unexplored stories of non-consummation" in the 13th Congress of the Asia Pacific Initiative on Reproduction (ASPIRE 2024) at Manila on 24 May, 2024.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

1. Ball room
Dancing
In the future, as part of leisure
activity it be my intention to belong
to a ball-room dancing group.
Personally, it is a way of exercise
and becoming an inclusive member
of one’s dual expression of the
physical space and emotion.
2. Travelling
I’ve travelled to some very distance
places and participated actively in
very different cultures to my own.
Eating their foods, working in their
environments, interacting with their
locals and participating in their
economies.
This experience was through
belonging to a travelling education
group, AIESEC.
3. Bus Driving
Within New Zealand there is a very
distinct conglomerate of people
involved in tour driving, it is its
community within New Zealand
(bus and coach association NZ).
Through 6 years of touring on
buses, I have a position in belonging
to this community.
Also, allowing me to learn NZ
histories and places I may not of
though to experience prior.
4. Theatre
Right through my schooling years
and beyond, I’ve relied on the
theatre community for social
gathering and experiences.
Over 10 years of on stage theatre
training, acting and management I
eventually associated myself with 3
different theatre associations.
5. Adventure Adrenaline
One of my favourite past times that
occupies my spare funds is
adventure activities…eg. Bungy
Jumping, Sky diving, jet boating,
cave rafting etc.
It’s just what I love to DO.
6. Friends and
Family
Through the things I love to do,
want to do, and am interested in
doing grows a flourish of interesting
people I call my friends.
Mostly, from days of
theatre/occupational therapy
education/psychological
education/student experiences etc.
Its about having comfort in
belonging to a group of people that
hold interests similar to that of
yours.
7. Occupational
therapist
In the future: It’s ones goal to be a
registered occupational therapist.
Where one has the satisfaction of
helping, facilitating and engaging in
communities that require such
things. In particular within
adolescent mental health
communities. I will be a facilitator
of needing communities.
8. Piano Player
In the future: concert piano playing
will be an endeavour/goal. After
already learning piano for several
years, in the bid to better my skills
in become a concert pianist.
This will open other communities
and socialisation opportunites.
9. Home building
In the future: I’ve always wanted to
build: renovate a church to become
my own home. To do such things,
gives larger meaning to make your
safe place a personal place. Actively
allowing your environments to
become/show apart of ones being.
10. DOGS
In the Future: Owning a dog allows
one to be a nurturer of life…much
like motherhood. It allows one to
belong to a group of society of pet
owners. Gives topics to talk about in
social situations, promotes oneself
to exercise while walking the dog.
