2. My initial ideas for the problem statement created last week
OBVIOUS
Get an agent to find work for you.
Join an actors guild and try and secure work through them.
Research industry related companies on the internet and approach them.
Identify people you admire and start to follow their carreer path.
Contact your local television station and ask if they need actresses, weather lady, TV presentors.
Audition for a roll in an advertisement.
WHAT COULD I ADD TO THE OBVIOUS SOLUTIONS?
Join a theatre production company as an apprentice or as an assistant.
Get a job on a filmset as an extra or a runner and work your way up from there.
Create a showreel for yourself with self-generated content.
Contact advertising agencies and give them a screentest and try and secure a role in an advertisement.
HOW WOULD A 5-YEAR OLD CHILD SOLVE THE PROBLEM?
Make a point of throwing theatrical tantrums in public and hope someone you get discovered.
Do you street theatre act created by yourself.
Join a circus.
HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM IF YOU HAD AN UNLIMITED BUDGET?
Go on a journey of theatre and travel to places worldwide and investigate their theatre/TV/film industries. eg Hollywood,
Bollywood and Nollywood.
Hang out at film festovils and try to get facetime with important looking film people.
Write your own screenplay and sell it to a film company.
Write your own novel and sell the film rights.
Start your own talk-show and sell it to a TV station.
HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM without spending any money?
Create your own documentary using an iphone and put it on youtube.
Start your own blog re screenwriting and get friends involved.
Go on a roadtrip and make your own film about your trip put it on the internet.
Make a documentary of a friends wedding using a cellphone.
Do restaurant reviews and put it on youtube or on a blog.
Start a documentary club and invite professionals to come and join it or give talks.
Write reviews about films and plays and send them to newspapers.
Investigate current events and interview people around you about it and write about it.
Write speeches for people for weddings etc.
Create a puppet show for children and use it to educate them.
Write a screenplay for an educational play.
Write your own ads and film using a cellphone.
Start teaching rural children how to act and try and get funding for it.
Create public awareness announcements regarding prevalent problems (like water saving), record them and get them
broadcast in villages in rural areas.
Review products and put it on the internet.
Create you own cooking show.
Produce your own show and perform at childrens parties.
HOW WOULD YOU SOLVE THE PROBLEM if you had control over the laws of nature?
Force masses of people to watch you perform self generated drama pieces.
Force companies to give you a chance as an actress or screenwriter.
OTHER SOLUTIONS
Ask companies if you could spend time there in order to see what carreer options are available to you and what you
interested in.
Generate content that is applicable to specific industries and offer it to those industries eg industrial theatre educating
mineworkers about HIV/AIDS which is presented to mining companies.
MY PROBLEM STATEMENT IS:
Susan, a postgraduate drama and screenwriting student:
– needs to be guided through the process of finding a suitable career path through exploring
her career options and educating herself on starting her own business, because she lacks the
information to proceed forward, she is uninformed as to her options and she is lacking the
self-confidence to start he own thing.
3. MY SHORTLISTED IDEAS
MOST DISRUPTIVE:
Go on a roadtrip and make your own film about your trip put it on the internet.
If my stakeholder wants to start her own business, she will need to: 1) generate her own content and 2) market it herself..
I would suggest that she starts generating content by using her own life experiences and what is availabe to her. She could
go on a roadtrip and record her experience using her own cellphone and writing her own content for it. She can then market
it using Facebook and put it on youtube. She can create a following for herself and use use this as a selling point when she
goes to see companies for work.
MOST PRACTICAL:
Audition for a roll in an advertisement.
Approach the art buying department of an advertising agency and audition for rolls in advertisements.
This will give her exposure and it will add to her work experience.
MOST DISRUPTIVE:
Generate content that is applicable to specific industries and PRESENT it
to those industries
In South Africa there is a very big demand for educational content which speaks to an illiterate target audience. This is
often used to educate them about social issues like HIV/AIDS and domestic abuse. There are many companies, as well as
the government that are willing to give funding to such projects. This would require intensive reasearch into these fields.
