This document summarizes research into using magnesium foils as cathodes for back-lighted thyratrons (BLTs). Key findings include:
1) Delays of BLT switches were reduced over three times by using magnesium cathodes compared to plain copper cathodes. The best delay measured was 150 ns.
2) Photoemission, rather than field emission or thermionic emission, was found to be the dominant electron emission mechanism for magnesium cathodes when triggered by UV laser pulses.
3) No significant degradation in switch performance was observed after 10 million shots at moderate currents for the magnesium cathodes.
