Just one more month till Spring, if that doesn’t pick
you then I don’t know what will, wait I do, our
stunning cover this month, we always have
beautiful and handsome models on our covers, but
that F-type Jag really steals the show. The best thing
about spring for me is that ICED* is turning 2 in
September and we are going all out, get your
cameras ready. The most interesting news I can
share is that we filmed the first episode of The
ICED* Show, the Vaal’s first talk show, with the
stunning Anne Keyter so look out for that. Now that
you have picked up the Mag, can you feel that it’s a
little heavier, that’s because we have upgraded to a
28 pager, we have been blessed with a great crop of

Who is liable?
Someone should be paying for the losses incurred during this period
of darkness, but that ‘someone’ should not be the ratepayers who, in
return for payment of rates and services, are entitled to expect service
delivery from their service provider.
A municipality can be held liable for losses caused in the law of delict.
In considering a delictual claim, our courts could follow Cape Town’s
example, where recently the Public Protector awarded damages to
a resident whose household electrical appliances were destroyed
during a power failure.
The Public Protector went on to hold the council responsible for its
negligence in failing to maintain the substations in question ade-
quately. She not only ordered the council to settle with the resident
within 30 days but further to apologise to her for the inconvenience.
This decision should be commended and should serve as a warning
to City Power. After all, the fear of a costs order may be the catalyst
necessary to create some order may be the catalyst necessary to create
some sense of accountability in the future.
What to do if you have suffered losses?
Option 1: Complete and submit the City Power’s complaint form for
re-imbursement. If this doesn’t work.
Option 2: Make an application to the National Consumer Protection
Commission for the issue of a compliance order to compel the City
to compensate you for your loss. If this fails.
Option 3: Submit a complaint to NERSA to order City Power to
compensate you. If option 1 -3 fail or you would rather skip them,
then.
Option 4: Consult an attorney to claim for the loss suffered by way
of legal action.

Jonathan ken die Oos-Rand soos die palm van sy hand
en het ook skoolgegaan by die meeste skole aan die
Oos-Rand. Te danke aan ‘n klein webtuiste genaamd
Youtube, is Jonathan nou dié ou by elke byeenkoms,
partytjie en geleentheid! Dit is baie moontlik dat drie
mense of meer, rondom ‘n tablet of mobiele foon sal
saamdrom en skaterlag vir wat hierdie
groter-as-die-lewe-self en“geen nosens” karakter aanvang.

As jy nog nie oortuig is nie, hier is die feite: Radio Raps se oorspronklike materiaal
van Jonathan op Youtube is vinnig oppad na 2 miljoen kyke in slegs agt maande en
gelykstaande aan nege jaar se aanhoudende kyke sonder ophou. Sy aanhangers en
volgelinge steek al die 80 000 kerf verby op Facebook, Youtube en Twitter. Dit is ongee-
wenaar aan enigeiets nóg gesien in die Suid-Afrikaanse sosiale biosfeer.

Jonathan het sy eerste kans gedurende Februarie 2014 op ‘n verhoog in Potchefstroom
gekry waar hy vir 30 minute lank voor ‘n gehoor moes optree en in sy eie woor-
de: “Natuurlik sou daar baie mense wees tjom! Almal wil ‘n stukkie van Jonathan hê...”
Daar was 1200 mense! Sy eerste volwaardige vertoning was gedurende Maart 2014
toe hy in Empangeni voor meer as 650 mense vir ‘n uur opgetree het en twee ure lank
handtekeninge uitgedeel het!

Sy eerste CD getiteld: “DA VAT HY VOL. 1” wat sal bestaan uit van sy gewildste
grappe en stories sowel as splinternuwes word gedurende Augustus 2014 vrygestel
en sal landswyd by alle goeie musiekwinkels beskikbaar wees. Kyk gerus uit vir Jon-

Oppikoppi is a music festival held in
the Limpopo Province of South Africa, near
the mining town of Northam. The festival
started off focusing mostly on rock music, but
gradually added more genres and now plays
host to a complete mixed bag of genres.
Anything from jazz, world music, house
music,acoustic,comedyandallelseinbetween
can be heard on one of the multiple stages.
Each year on the second weekend of August
thousands of people flock to the farm to camp
out in the bush and enjoy the music for
several days. The festival features mostly
South African bands, although international
acts are included in the line-up, especial-
ly now that Oppikoppi is becoming more
successful.The festival started in 1994, with 27
local talents performing to a small crowd of
enthusiasts. It has since grown substantially,
with the addition of many new stages and
thousands of people turning up each year. The
festival is regarded by some as the primary
influence in jump-starting the South African
rock music movement in the late 90’s.
It attracts thousands of attendees annually.
According to the organizers they have
“rolled bakkies, burnt tents, driven over knees,
slept in jails, slept outside jails and turned over
several stones to make gigs and festivals work.”
In 2008, the Daily Mirror ranked Oppikoppi
as the 4th best music festival in the world.
The festival has grown yearly, with 16 000
attendees and around 100 acts for both 2010
and 2011 and an estimated 20 000 attendees
and 130 acts for 2012.
The festival hosts a wide array of acts, with
artists being booked from genres includ-
ing, but not limited to: rock, hip hop,hard-
core, punk, ska, folk, blues, drum ‘n bass, big
beats, funk, kwaito, jazz, traditional, world
music, metal, indy and other genres.
In the past there had been smaller, more
intimate gatherings on each Easter
weekend in April and New Year’s gatherings.

What are you guys currently up to and what can we expect in the months to come? Currently I am sitting in my gown, trying to keep
warm. Gareth is probably asleep now surrounded by Pugs. Besides that, we are shooting a new music video, which should be released in the
next few weeks. Other than that, we just got some more animation episodes planned, and an exciting journey to a far off land.
If there was a movie produced about your life. Who would play you and why? Nick Offerman. Same name, same love of meat.
Describe yourself in one word. Tired
Your latest video ‘Payday’ features my future wife Jeanie D (piercing glance), how did this come about? We were doing an interview on
News24, and they mentioned she was coming in for an interview shortly after hours. We decided to film a short message to her on the inter-
viewer’s phone explaining how we were sitting on the same couch as her, so we were basically bum buddies. We then asked her to be in our
video and she was keen. She is friendly, but tiny... kind of like a Jack Russel. Also terrible with directions.
If you were on an island and could only bring 3 things. What would you bring and why? Wood, rope and a large sheet.
You have a ‘few’ tattoos. Which tattoo means the most to you and which is the most ridiculous? I got my mom to pose her hands in the
iconic praying hands pose, and got that tattooed on my neck. Then the most ridiculous would either be the knife and fork I have on my right
and left hand or the ‘Tea - Rex’ which is basically a T-Rex holding a pot of tea with a scroll reading “Tea Time”
Can we expect to see Derick Watts and the Sunday Blues on stage anytime soon? We do have a goal to put together a live show and take to
the comedy stages. Hopefully we will get that together in 2015.
If you had 1 wish, would you bring about world peace? (cliché – Yawn) If not, what would you wish for? Maybe I’d wish for a President
who we could be proud of again.
We all have embarrassing CD’s in our cars and houses that we aren’t all too proud of but we still enjoy,
what CD that you own would you say is ‘Less than cool’? Nickelback Silver Side Up... Oh the Shame.

DERICK WATTS & THE SUNDAY BLUES are comedic geniuses from the
happy hipster place in the most southern tip of Africa – Cape town. They are responsible for
viral video hits such as “Braaiday”, “The Car Guard Song”, “Behind The LOLS”, “The Movem-
ber Song” and more recently the smash Youtube sensation ‘’Payday’’ featuring the Kiffness
and Jack Parow.
Adam caught up with the slightly more inked up half of the duo Nic Smal to ask him some
questions about life, love and everything comedy.
Nic, I have followed your career for a while now, both as a stalker and a fan. (By the way you
are out of milk) You have played drums in numerous rock and punk bands. How did you get
into comedy and more specifically into Derick Watts and the Sunday Blues? As long as I’m not
out of Bacon we all good. I think anyone that knows me, will know that I have a hard time being
serious. I guess DW started when we shot Braaiday. Gareth Allison and I have been friends for
a long time, we lived together for years and played in bands together as well. We especially have
a hard time being serious around each other and DW is pretty much a visual representation of all
the rubbish we talk and joke about.

Light up your life!
Exchange those candles for 300watt light bulb. Although this is a short term solution is it said by burning these bulbs at night,
that your body will release a hormone called serotonin. Serotonin is known as a ‘happy hormone’. It significantly influences an
overall sense of well being. It helps to regulate moods, temper anxiety, relieves depression, and aids with regular sleeping pattern.
It also regulates aggression, appetite and sexuality.
The D-word: Bulk up on those Vitamin D foods. Milk, eggs and liver are great sources of Vitamin D. If you are vegetarian invest
in a Vitamin D supplement. It has been said that Vitamin D helps to prevent colds and flues, something we are all a prisoner to
during these cold months.
Sensible servings: You burn much more energy during the winter months. Try to have six to eight small portions of food daily.
This will ultimately stop hunger spans but at the very same time keep your metabolism healthy and on the go.
The three P-rule: Stick to healthy commodities to snack on this winter. Peanut butter, popcorn and pre-washed vegetables are a
great option. They are low in fat and high in added nutrition.
Choc-o-block: Have a small block of dark chocolate daily. Dark chocolate is good for your heart; it reduces blood pressure and
cholesterol. It also stimulates endorphin production, which gives a feeling of pleasure and also contains serotonin. Serotonin also
acts as an anti-depressant.
Sex-e-time: Sex in a relationship has several health benefits. It boosts your immune system, which can also protect you from
colds and flues. The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep.
Xtreme Sports: Participating in extreme sports has a plus side! Dopamine is released in the brain following the extreme experi-
ence, which creates feelings of optimism and happiness. So do not hesitate to participate in that bike ride, sky-diving, or bungee
jumping, you won’t just overcome those blues but might just execute things from your bucket list!
Winter should not be a prison mentally or physically. Fill those gloomy gaps with serotonin
filled ideas. You have all the reasons to be a ray of sunlight in this wintry weather.

You guys have been growing in popularity year on year with 2013-2014 being your
pinnacle year opening for international acts such as The Kooks, Last Dinosaurs and The
Dune Rats. Reaching top 5 on 5fm and picking up a couple of MK awards.
What do you think attributes to your success?
We’re just 5 guys playing music that we love with our friends. We practice hard and
sweat it out during tours, but we do it because we love it. We need to give our fans a
reason to keep coming back, so we try and stay fresh and keep the live show exciting.
Where did the name Shortstraw originate from?
The dictionary.
Who are your musical influences?
Weezer, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Blink 182, Gloria Estefan, Desmond and the
Tutus, Bon Ivor.

If ever a prize is presented for tenacity and patience,
local rock band, Gage, should definitely be considered
as contenders – and it’s paid off.
The band recently announced that they have signed a deal with US company, Mahvrick
International, who will be working on the group’s marketing and distribution worldwide
for their latest album, Break the Silence. “When we first heard the band we knew they
were something special,” says Pramo Virk from Mahvrick. “We are aggressively pushing
the band for tours, as well as film and television placements.”
The band is headed by the very enigmatic Jason Horseman on lead vocals and drums
and backed by guitarist Llewellyn Burger and Russel Nathanson on bass. The album
boasts 11 original tracks written by the frontman with creative support from the rest of
the team. “Each track is meant to take you on a musical journey. There are songs with
a slow relaxed vibe and then others which turn into a high tempo adrenaline rush,” says
Jason. “I’ve drawn inspiration from my own personal growth, emotions and relation-
ships. There’s a definite raw emotional presence.”
Mahvrick owns a joint venture entity with Global Universal, a well-known film produc-
tion and entertainment company based in Hollywood. With their clients having over 250
million records sold worldwide in both rock and urban genres, Mahvrick will be putting
all their weight behind the album. “Gage is something special. Once their record is re-
leased domestically, we will start pushing the records for TV, commercials and film.” The
album will be distributed to retailers and mobile carriers in more than 170 countries.
Break the Silence will be the band’s debut album in the US and is currently being re-
packaged and produced by Oliver Del Camino for release. Gage is currently working on
songs for a trip to the US later this year which will include a performance for US troops.
“We’ve been through many changes. The band
has changed; we’ve gotten better, stronger and
harder. We are so blessed to be given this
opportunity and we know our hard work has
paid off. It’s a real personal achievement.”
