Jan Diettrich is a physicist at the
British Antarctic Survey, looking at
the atmospheric temperature with
two high powered lasers in a region
of outer space called the mesopause,
and above. There, at around 90-
100 km altitude, temperature
can get below -123 °C. Cooling of
the mesopause is an indication of
climate change on Earth. He recently
spent two summers collecting data
