The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is a multilateral treaty that forms part of the International Bill of Human Rights. It was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1966 and has been ratified by 147 states. The ICCPR elaborates on the civil and political rights outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including the right to life, freedom from torture, slavery, and arbitrary detention, freedom of speech and religion, rights to due process and a fair trial, and rights to privacy, marriage, voting, and equal treatment under the law. The covenant is monitored by the UN Human Rights Committee.
