How the Battle Began In the beginning of 1944, the U.S. and Great Britain focused land, naval, and air forces in England to prepare for Operation Overload, which was the attack of Hitler’s “Fortress Europe.” The 12,000 planes of the Allied Forces attacked the German air force from the skies. They took pictures of the enemy’s defenses, provided supplies for the resistance, bombed railways, attacked Germany's industries and isolated the battlefield. While that was happening, the nine army divisions from the U.S., Britain, and Canada trained and practiced their roles in the carefully planned operation.

The Events of D-Day Early in the invasion, over 1,000 transports dropped paratroopers to defend the flanks and beach exits of the battle area. Land and water crafts landed about 130,000 troops on five beaches along 50 miles of Normandy coast while the air forces controlled the skies.
The Events of D-Day The first wave landed at OMAHA Beach at 6:30 a.m. Slowly soldiers began to cross the beach. They were protected by allied naval gunfire from destroyers close to the shore. The American infantrymen gained the beach exits and drove the enemy inland The 82 nd and 101 st airborne divisions were dropped behind UTAH Beach to secure four causeways. Their mission was a success.
