Federated Galaxy: Biomedical Computing at the Frontier
Biomedical data exploration requires integrative analyses of large datasets using a diverse ecosystem of tools. For more than a decade, the Galaxy project (https://galaxyproject.org) has provided researchers with a web-based, user-friendly, scalable data analysis framework complemented by a rich ecosystem of tools (https://usegalaxy.org/toolshed) used to perform genomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and imaging experiments. Galaxy can be deployed on the cloud (https://launch.usegalaxy.org), institutional computing clusters, and personal computers, or readily used on a number of public servers (e.g., https://usegalaxy.org). In this paper, we present our plan and progress towards creating Galaxy-as-a-Service—a federation of distributed data and computing resources into a panoptic analysis platform. Users can leverage a pool of public and institutional resources, in addition to plugging-in their private resources, helping answer the challenge of resource divergence across various Galaxy instances and enabling seamless analysis of biomedical data.

Approximate QoS Rule Derivation Based on Root Cause Analysis for Cloud Comput...
This document summarizes a paper presented at the PRDC 2019 conference in Kyoto, Japan. It discusses an approach called μQoS for autonomous recovery in cloud computing. μQoS uses root cause analysis and derives new quality of service (QoS) monitoring rules when existing rules are not satisfied, allowing recovery actions to be taken without expanding resources. It evaluates μQoS using an Apache Cassandra database under different workloads and fault conditions. The results show μQoS can effectively detect root causes and derive new QoS rules to enable autonomous recovery in real systems with high precision. Mithileysh Sathiyanarayanan and Mohammad Alsaffar presented Euler-time Diagrams, a novel visual method and software tool to represent set relationships over time. Most scientific discoveries rely on previous or other findings. A lack of transparency and openness led to what many consider the "reproducibility crisis" in systems biology and systems medicine. The crisis arose from missing standards and inappropriate support of
standards in software tools. As a consequence, numerous results in low-and high-profile publications cannot be reproduced.
In my presentation, I summarise key challenges of reproducibility in systems biology and systems medicine, and I demonstrate available solutions to the related problems.

MediCal QAWeb is an online software service developed by Barco for monitoring image quality and uptime of medical display systems in hospitals all over the world. The service is the first of its kind and offers proactive alerts of quality issues, automatic issue solving, centralized asset and Quality Assurance reporting and much more. The next version of MediCal QAWeb is under development and will use MongoDB and Node.js. The system will be built on Microsoft’s Internet of Things building blocks running on the Azure platform. In this presentation, Barco and Microsoft will explain how the Internet of Things has provided new services and revenue opportunities for them and for their customers by building solutions that until recently were unimaginable. They will explain the technology and architectural design choices made in order to guarantee that the platform which connects several tens of thousands of devices today can scale to support their growing customer needs long into the future.
Linking HPC to Data Management - EUDAT Summer School (Giuseppe Fiameni, CINECA)
EUDAT and PRACE joined forces to help research communities gain access to high quality managed e-Infrastructures whose resources can be connected together to enable cross-utilization use cases and make them accessible without any technical barrier. The capability to couple data and compute resources together is considered one of the key factors to accelerate scientific innovation and advance research frontiers. The goal of this session was to present the EUDAT services, the results of the collaboration activity achieved so far and delivers a hands-on on how to write a Data Management Plan or DMP. The DMP is a useful instrument for researchers to reflect on and communicate about the way they will deal with their data. It prompts them to think about how they will generate, analyse and share data during their research project and afterwards.

MediCal QAWeb is an online software service developed by Barco for monitoring image quality and uptime of medical display systems in hospitals all over the world. The service is the first of its kind and offers proactive alerts of quality issues, automatic issue solving, centralized asset and Quality Assurance reporting and much more. The next version of MediCal QAWeb is under development and will use MongoDB and Node.js. The system will be built on Microsoft’s Internet of Things building blocks running on the Azure platform. In this presentation, Barco and Microsoft will explain how the Internet of Things has provided new services and revenue opportunities for them and for their customers by building solutions that until recently were unimaginable. They will explain the technology and architectural design choices made in order to guarantee that the platform which connects several tens of thousands of devices today can scale to support their growing customer needs long into the future.

EUDAT and PRACE joined forces to help research communities gain access to high quality managed e-Infrastructures whose resources can be connected together to enable cross-utilization use cases and make them accessible without any technical barrier. The capability to couple data and compute resources together is considered one of the key factors to accelerate scientific innovation and advance research frontiers. The goal of this session was to present the EUDAT services, the results of the collaboration activity achieved so far and delivers a hands-on on how to write a Data Management Plan or DMP. The DMP is a useful instrument for researchers to reflect on and communicate about the way they will deal with their data. It prompts them to think about how they will generate, analyse and share data during their research project and afterwards.

Efficiency and Effectiveness: Shared services to support STEM subjects
The VRE-CI project is funded by JISC to provide a framework for researchers and clinicians involved in cancer imaging to share information, images, and algorithms. The project will develop a module for cancer imaging that allows sharing of DICOM images and image processing algorithms through scientific workflows and web services. It will also include an image viewer using DeepZoom technology and functionality for loading images securely while maintaining appropriate levels of anonymity.

Bram Verhoef, Head of Machine Learning at Axelera AI, presents the “How Axelera AI Uses Digital Compute-in-memory to Deliver Fast and Energy-efficient Computer Vision” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
As artificial intelligence inference transitions from cloud environments to edge locations, computer vision applications achieve heightened responsiveness, reliability and privacy. This migration, however, introduces the challenge of operating within the stringent confines of resource constraints typical at the edge, including small form factors, low energy budgets and diminished memory and computational capacities. Axelera AI addresses these challenges through an innovative approach of performing digital computations within memory itself. This technique facilitates the realization of high-performance, energy-efficient and cost-effective computer vision capabilities at the thin and thick edge, extending the frontier of what is achievable with current technologies.

zkStudyClub - LatticeFold: A Lattice-based Folding Scheme and its Application...
Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.
