I just had a patient diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver cancer. He had suffered from cirrhosis for many years, and had a history of alcoholism. He had just gotten a biopsy of his liver last fall, and nothing was found. He started having severe abdominal pain, went to the ED, and found that his lymph nodes were very large behind his liver. He asked the doctor directly, "is it cancer?" and the doctor said yes. He came to me, asked me to refer him to oncology and has gotten chemotherapy. Unfortunately, they aren't able to do much as stage 4 it metastasis, and non-operable. I referred pt to Palliative Care, but the nurse that went out became confused and discussed the benefits of Hospice with the patient and his wife. They said that they weren't interested in the services, as they felt like it was "giving up" and they felt like there was still hope for the patient. The woman consented to the therapy and signed the appropriate forms, but later, she began to have second thoughts. The nursing educator and student had given the patient one dose of the therapy when the woman began to cry and express her reservations about the therapy. She questioned the nurse about alternative treatments to the use of chemotherapy. The patient related that she had accepted the therapy because her son had advised her that this was the best treatment. She related that she had not asked about alternate forms of treatment as the physician had indicated that chemotherapy was the only treatment indicated. The nurse did not discuss the patient's concerns with the physician, and later that evening, she talked to the patient about alternate therapies. In the discussion, rather nontraditional and controversial therapies were covered including reflexology and the use of laetrile. During the talk, the nurse made it very clear that the treatments under discussion were not sanctioned by the medical community.
The patient's feelings toward alternate therapies were strengthened by the evening's conversation; however, she continued with chemotherapy. The treatments, however, did not bring remission to her crisis and she died two weeks later. Upon hearing about the conversation between the off duty nurse educator and his patient, the physician brought charges against the nurse for unprofessional conduct and interfering with the patient-physician relationship. You work in the administration of a major hospital. One of your tasks is the scheduling of one of the operating rooms in the hospital. The room is used for a specific elective surgery. You allocate a certain amount of time for a surgery; if the actual duration of the surgery exceeds the allocated time, the surgery scheduled next has to start later, and this usually results in overtime at the end of the day where surgery personnel have to stay late into the evening hours. You currently allocate 90 minutes for each surgery (from the beginning until the room is ready for the next patient). However, surgeons and personnel have voiced their opinion that they believe this is not enough time – too often do they run over, and too often do they have to stay late to resolve schedule overruns. The higher levels of the administration agree, since overtime work is generally associated with higher costs as well as possibly worse patient outcomes. You decide to manage this process more rigorously, and download data on 200 completed surgeries that contains information on the actual durations of the surgeries (beginning until the room is ready again), as well as some data on which surgery team was involved, and some patient specific data (Body Mass Index, or BMI of patient), see Surgery Data.xls.

John Rommel was born in 1955 to a lower class family in New York. His father had immigrated over to the United States from Germany prior to the rise of Hitler in 1933. He desired to show pride in his new country, so he worked hard at the docks to earn a living for his family. While he was never made much, he always stressed pride in his work and obeyed the law. He believed this was a firm foundation for becoming successful.
John always showed a bright mind and highly intuitive nature, but he never showed any desire for schooling. He saw society as an unfair, unforgiving system that repressed those of lower social status. John was not a violent person; he considered himself very honorable, but he did not have a desire to work like his father did, earning low wages for hours of tedious work to support his family. Instead, he opted for more illegal endeavors—gambling, stealing, and even dabbling in organized crime. However, he never told his father because he did not want to disrespect his family. When he turned 17, he became a drug-runner for the Gambino family because a couple of his close “brothers” had become involved in the business as well.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

He had just gotten a biopsy of his liver last fall, and nothing was found. He started having severe abdominal pain, went to the ED, and found that his lymph nodes were very large behind his liver. He asked the doctor directly, "is it cancer?" and the doctor said yes. He came to me, asked me to refer him to oncology and has gotten chemotherapy. Unfortunately, they aren't able to do much as stage 4 it metastasis, and non-operable. I referred pt to Palliative Care, but the nurse that went out became confused and discussed the benefits of Hospice with the patient and his wife. They said that they weren't interested in the services, as they felt like it was "giving up" and they felt like there was still hope for the patient.
