This 42-year-old man from Tammerfors, Finland graduated from Tampere Polytechnic in 2002 with a B.A. in multimedia production. His studies focused on multimedia design, production and virtual reality projects. He wrote his thesis on QTVR material production. In 2005-2006 he studied organizational communication at Open University of Jyväskylä, where he learned about visual communication techniques like photography and image manipulation. He has worked as a photographer, visual designer, and part-time nurse and teacher. He is now applying to the School of Information Sciences to upgrade his skills in gaming and become a designer in the gaming industry.

1. I am a 42 year old man from Tammerfors living in the idyllic Härmälä district. I graduated in
2002 from Tampere Polytechnic Art and Communication Department of Media Studies option
in multimedia production with a B.A. degree. Training program focused on a variety of platforms
and immersive multimedia environments. We did a variety of projects related with multimedia
design, composing and production. We also operated as the pre-reviewers of Tampere
multimedia competition. Virtual reality projects were carried out with Tampere Virtual Reality
Center and FogScreen Inc. I wrote my thesis about QTVR-material production. Multimedia
study was challenging and demanded extensive focusing on. It was a fast-paced adoption of
information in the continuous stream of technology change. But, above all, learning was a
extremely satisfying and rewarding.
I studied organizational communication at the Open University of Jyväskylä, 2005-2006,
where we focused on how different forms of communication, media and communication
means should be used so that the message would reach its target audience - how do the
different communication networks operate and what is good PR. I edited and laid out the
customer magazine of the Open University of Jyväskylä with the students. During the course
I taught photography and image processing. I taught what is efficient and aesthetic visual
communication and how it is carried out in photography and image manipulation techniques.
I have worked as a photographer and visual designer in various companies and communities.
I have worked in both electronic and print media. In addition, I have given lectures concerning
these occupations as a part-time teacher. I have also worked as a nurse during phases when
there has been less possibilities for practising my main occupation. There's more detailed

School of Information Sciences is a natural extension of my earlier studies and employment
history. I am a highly motivated I have a strong knowledge and understanding of the multi-
media, interactive media, gaming cultures and the use of immersive environments. I have
personally experienced how the PC gaming has evolved from Atari video games until the
present day. I've started to use the Internet in the times of Gopher application protocol. These
user-experiences together provide a solid foundation for Internet and game studies, and in
this way for all of the new planning and progress in my case. I want to upgrade my skills in
the Master's degree program to meet the present day requirements. I would like to specialize
in advanced studying of gaming, which I am planning to do the Master's thesis about. I aim
for occupation as the future designer in the gaming industry. I also find it possible to continue
at the University of MA postgraduate studies or to teach the topic at the University. I'm
interested in what are the future phenomena in the gaming culture . I want to be at the
forefront of game research and be involved in overseeing the Finnish game industry as it
transforms into the new flagship of domestic exports. I want to bring my own vision and skills
into the process. I want to become a serious professional in the field of game industry.
