Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, poisonous gas that smells like rotten eggs. It is liberated by burning explosives containing sulfur or from stagnant water in mines. It can be detected by its odor or by chemical tests that turn black in its presence. Hydrogen sulfide is explosive in concentrations between 4.3-46% and poisonous even in small amounts. Exposure to 0.05-0.07% can become dangerous after half an hour due to effects like disorientation and nausea.
