Business Situation The research data is made available to the clientele of Transformanz through a subscription model. Tranformanz used to deliver the content on the internet through a website that used a content management system called Joomla. The data content and data visualizations were built manually and were static, which implied that more amount of attention needed to be paid to update information. This made the process long and tedious. Moreover, the application and process was not scalable in terms of handling the growth in number of users and data.

Business Situation With the phenomenon of outsourcing back-office operations from the West to the low cost destinations like India taking the backstage, BPO companies are trending towards rural areas due to factors like availability of untapped talent, affordable lower estate and lower operational costs. The key challenge here was to build a strong and powerful data entry system for the operators at RuralShores to use.

Business Situation The previous design of the portal had availability issues. The downtime was severe and significantly high crippling the operations. The user interface and user experience had failed to live to the expectation of the stakeholders and customers. The customers were not able to redeem points due to the outage resulting in unacceptable portal behavior and bad user experience. When the business grew in size with more vendors being pooled to offer their products, the portal failed to scale and cost the company dearly. It was a typical Java/J2EE portal built with MySQL as backend and hosted on Apache. While the setup was in place, the system had many issues with regard to handling and development of code. When there were concurrent users, the load test failed and the portal shut down. When more vendors wished to showcase their products, the system could scale only beyond a number and crash thereafter. Hence, from a technical and business standpoint, it was decided to scrap the entire project and start ground-up.

The time spent and efforts expended when converted in terms of productivity are a huge loss. So is there anything that is as good as the Outlook calendar, if not better, made online and cost-effective at the same time? How can you increase meetings with your customers and prospects at B2B events by 30% or more? These were the posers presented by the client in search of a custom solution that would solve these problems.

Business Situation WPA[Workplace Answers] wanted services to load their servers to about 40k users and measure the KPIs from both users as well as servers standpoint. They set high standards to mimic production like loads in a time slice of one hour. Many load testing tools provide master-slave architecture to combat the said problem, wherein the architecture allows us to generate loads from diﬀerent machines. Even though in theory this is feasible over a LAN, in reality when we move over to the Internet, bandwidth available over network & ISP hamper load generation activity thereby providing skewed, inﬂated and erroneous results. In addition to generating huge loads, KPI's on various parameters need to be captured from both servers and load generating machines into a common master machine, which again is a bottleneck when it comes to huge quantity of virtual users in a small time slice.

Business Situation Having narrowed down on social media as the right solution to connect NRIs, the challenge was to shortlist the social networking frameworks available and forward our recommendations to the client. The advantages of choosing a framework was that it would lead to faster time to market as the base features were readily available. The framework would also improve the user experience through frequent updates, increased stability, full source code control and less time to go live!

Business Situation Immumterix does analysis of DNA sequences and the immune system using multiple lab techniques. They needed to use computational techniques to analyze DNA through methods like high throughput analysis. They would analyze the DNA sequence and would represent each element through ASCII values. By studying the DNA sequence thoroughly, they were able to understand human DNA through various algorithms. What they needed was sequence alignment analysis and similarity searches in biological databases. Each sample would contain approximately 400 MB to 1 GB of data and would need customization based on the data collected. The need was to coordinate with the scientists from Immumetrix in order to understand the complexities and align the analytical algorithm accordingly. The objective of the project was to analyze the DNA data and provide outputs in CSV and graphical formats.

Business Situation The company was founded in 2008, with their SAAS application on dedicated infrastructure hosted with a hosting provider. It went on to be become a popular data visualization provider with bloggers, teachers, government analysts and small business owners, along with Fortune 500 companies and other market research partners who started harnessing the power tool. The business need was to grow further, in terms of storage, bandwidth and processing capacity called for ad hoc needs for scaling the infrastructure, which was limited by SLAs provided by the infrastructure vendor.

Business Situation The G3C provides contextual information, referred to as Visual Meta Data or simply as Meta Data, pertaining to images, videos, and video frames using Graymatics’ AdVisualyzer (ad-optimized image/video analysis platform). Our processing model supports both on-demand/on line and batch/off-line mode. The previous system had a preliminary architecture which supported computer cluster scalability and a basic level of fault tolerance. This basic level of fault-tolerance was not sufficient for providing a highlevel of Service Level Agreement (SLA) for the customers. Many implementation level optimizations should be made to reduce the latencies in the workflow which are crucial for the customer response performance.The current implementations did not support the video analysis very well and that needed to be taken care of in the new architecture.

Business Situation The portal was not merely an alternative for the brick and mortal stores or establishing an online presence. There were some structural challenges faced by the client in provisioning the platform with the ability of a store owner to set-up a shop in the portal anywhere/anytime irrespective of the geographical location because the Portal was positioned as ‘International’ serving the global community. Another daunting challenge was setting up multi-mall and multi-shops, meaning there will be many malls within the portal and each mall can house as many shops based on products/categories. Thus the streamlining too proved to be a pain point. Ofcourse, the aspects of cross-sell. Most importantly, the effective promotion in converting a lead into a customer was another tough spot. With online shopping, comes the complexity of payment gateway integration and also handling multiple currencies. Besides, empowering the shop-owners to self-manage their shops was a key requirement.

Business Situation The client sources the market research data from one of the largest market research companies, which provides around 34 trillion data points of relevant market research data, which was made available to client using their proprietary tool. The market research department of client would then work through this data for about two months to manually create a 220 tabbed excel report, after doing analytics and calculations on raw data manually, using tools provided by one of the largest market research companies, and using other tools, to be used by marketers and brand managers to make rightful business decisions. This was a very inefficient approach since there was loss of valuable time until the report was published. Most of the process was manual; giving scope to human errors. The reports were shared through emails, physical documents creating lack of flexibility and easy availability. Creating new reports was extremely time consuming and an expensive process. The client has to source some of the data from one of the largest market research companies, which usually turned out to be expensive.

Business Situation Tobacco tax evasion is a problem that costs federal and state governments billions per year. For example, the state of Washington loses an estimated $200 million per year due to tobacco tax fraud. Governments lose money in two ways: the first occurs when cigarettes are smuggled from lower tax to higher tax states. The second is from cigarettes stamped with counterfeit tax stamps. When tax revenues are stolen, they don’t go to their intended sources of funding tax relief programs, healthcare and infrastructure. In some cases, these stolen revenues have been shown to fund criminal and terrorist activities. As a result, governments lose millions in tax revenue and the security of their citizens is threatened. Like currency, traditional tax stamps carry inherent value and need to be treated as such. This creates challenges in securing the manufacturing, distribution, and application of the stamps. Tracking of cigarette packs throughout their distribution would enable tax authorities to ensure proper tax collection, but currently taxes on cigarettes are collected via a stamp system that has very limited track and trace capabilities. In order to manage tobacco tax revenue collection efficiently and securely, it is necessary to significantly improve tax stamp security features and transition stamp distribution from a centralized print and distribute model to a secure print-on-demand model.

Business Situation The challenges that 9Lenses had was regarding deploying the research methodology. The clients were located in different geographical locations making it difficult to collect data manually. Huge amounts of data was accumulated in large files, mostly as spreadsheets. Running the tests and gathering data with geographical and time constraints was a true challenge. There was less flexibility due to usage of traditional data collection tools. To add to this, a huge amount of resources were required to deal with each client.

We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
