Surgery is the preferred treatment for hydatid cysts of the liver. Medical management is only for inoperable patients or to prevent recurrence. While more radical surgical procedures may offer better control of local recurrence and lower postoperative morbidity, they cannot be considered the standard treatment. Hydatid disease is caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus and is a parasitic infestation, most commonly affecting the liver and lungs. The only living part of the hydatid cyst is the endocyst.
