Ladies and Gentleman, As a research fellow from Hungary, my talk is about a short summary of Hungarian culture, history, with a special focus of my home university town Pécs. At the end I will show some of the research results of my stay at Kyushu Daigaku. First, let’s center the world map according to how hungarian people see the Globe. Right in the middle you can see an area: the basin enclosed by these mountains is our homeland, just in the heart of Europe.
This geographical area is called Carpathian basin surrounded by the mountains called Carpathians which are actually the continuation of the Alps to the east. The biggest river in central-east Europe runs here called Danube splitting the basin, to the west of it is my home University town, Pécs. Because of an advantageous geographical location, thermal water can be found with good quality and in great quantities on over 80% of Hungary's territory. Approximately 1,500 thermal springs can be found in Hungary. There are approximately 450 public baths in Hungary. The country is home to the largest thermal lake in Europe and the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton). Hungary has a continental climate , [74] with hot summers with low overall humidity levels but frequent rainshowers and mildly cold snowy winters. This area has a special climate where humid and mild wind from northwest, dry and warm wind from southwest, and arctic cold wind from the north-east make the weather in spring and autumn highly unpredictable. Best season to visit Hungary is May and September, like it is for visiting Japan. The next map shows some cultural information about distribution of europe’s languages. Here you can see that Hungary is not related to any of the surrounding neighbours, despite having borders with all three major language families: german, romance and slavs. The language is hungarian, or as we call it MAGYAR, which is related to a completely different language family with the closest relatives in Finland, and in North-west asia. This relative isolation is due to the historical fact that indo-european tribes from Asia colonized Europe about 4000 years ago, while MAGYARS came here only 1000 years ago.
This small animation shows how the magyar tribes moved and conquested the Carpathian basin 1000 years ago, where they were the first to establish a permanent christian state. For several centuries Magyars were living in the area of today’s Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine before reaching the Carpathian basin.
And here some typical hungarian folk motifs either from 1000 years ago or today as worn by british formula-1 drivers last year indicating its popularity among world known celebrities.
As i have shown the geographycal Hungary was always a multicultural site. My university town, pécs, is itself a really multicultural city.
Only seven countries (US, USSR, UK, France, Italy, China, and Germany) have won more Summer Olympic gold medals than Hungary.
Hungary revolutionized the sport in the 1950s, laying the tactical fundamentals of Total Football and dominating international football with the remarkable Golden Team which included legends like Ferenc Puskás, top goalscorer of the 20th century,[115][116][117] whom FIFA dedicated[118] its newest award, the Puskás Award.
