The Humane Society of the United States works to reduce animal suffering and promote animal welfare through advocacy, education, hands-on programs, and enforcement of animal cruelty laws. About the Humane Society We were established in 1954 We use all of our resources to improve the lives of animals by supporting better laws and prompting corporations to use animal-friendly practices. We act to provide direct care to animals in need and provide disaster relief we even have mobile veterinary clinics. We have many shelters were we care for sick or injured animals and prepare them to be adopted to loving homes

5. Personal Connection I grew up with animals, I never had less than three dogs and two cats at any given time. It became rote that my grandma and I would watch Animal Cops Houston every time it came on. It infuriates me that someone could even begin to think that it is okay to treat animals that way. Since then I have always tried to help animals, starting from the time I was about six to, now I am always coming home with strays, I don’t like seeing a dog just running around I am afraid they are going to get hit, or eaten. Also, I donate to The Humane Society on a regular basis. Animals are my life, I plan on making a career out of helping animals.

6. Get Involved One way to get involved is to donate whether you donate time or money. Donated time and money is the scaffolding that keeps us going on a daily basis. Another way is right now we are having a “Walk for Pups to stop puppy mills” this is a virtual walk to raise money to stop puppy mills in Missouri. 7. Critical Thinking We must use critical thinking when coming up with ways to remove an animal from a risky situation as safely as possible Critical Thinking is a large part of how we prosecute offenders of animal cruelty to the fullest extent of the law because animal cruelty is against the law! Sometimes people do not think what they are doing is wrong and we have to explicate to them that chaining a dog to a tree and throwing scraps its way sometimes is breaking the law.

8. Critical Action In many cases we must act quickly and efficiently to save the lives of many animals in one day. If there is a claim of animal cruelty we have to seek the truth and see if any abuse is actually taking place. We must be very cautious when dealing with abused and neglected animals because they are generally fearful of people and many times will act with aggression to protect themselves, not realizing we are there to help. If there are a lot of animals in one location things can get complicated because their instinct is to dissipate , which makes it harder to catch all of them.

10. Critical Reading We support bills and work to push laws that help and benefit animals. We are required to carefully read all bills and pieces of legislation to make sure there are no loopholes that could possibly endanger the lives of animals. We are required to assess the past year and the research we have collected to see what the most important changes that need to be made are.

11. Inputs Our President and CEO, Wayne Pacelle has been at his position since 2004 and before that he spent ten years as our chief lobbyist. We survive mainly on donations, we have commercials you may have seen asking people to help support us, we are backed by more that 11 million Americans We also host events to raise money for the animals like the Humane Society walk for the Animals

Outputs We locate animals in need that are being neglected and abused We remove the animals from dangerous situations We use vets to help assess the situation and how desperate the animal is and if it can be placed and saved or if it is in the animals best interest to end its suffering and euthanize it. We have a team of pro bono attorneys that will prosecute the animal abusers We work to analyze the law and make sure they are charged to the full extent of the law We work with litigators to pass laws that protect animals’ and their rights as living creatures

13. Community Most major cities have a Humane Society location. Unfortunately all cities have people or corporations (depending on the city) that are cruel, neglectful are abusive toward animals No animal should have to suffer so every community needs advocates for the animals because there are animals in every community.

The Shuttleworth Foundation The Shuttleworth Foundation is good fit for the Humane Society because they want to support organizations that are “helping change the world for the better” They want people who are at the forefront of social change, and the Humane Society is working to make animal cruelty socially unacceptable instead of having people just turn a blind eye.
