This document provides a brief introduction to human rights. It discusses human rights from three perspectives: as ethical concerns based on concepts of justice and fairness; as legal rights established through positive law and international agreements; and as social claims arising from advocacy movements addressing injustice. The document also outlines some key historical milestones in the development of human rights concepts from ancient philosophical and religious traditions through modern declarations of rights. It examines ongoing tensions regarding the universality of rights and challenges in implementing rights in practice.
