The Human Skeletal System
The human skeletal system consists of 206 bones that provide structure, protect organs, allow muscle attachment, store minerals, and produce red blood cells. Bones can be divided into the axial skeleton of the skull, spine, and rib cage and the appendicular skeleton of the arms, shoulders, and legs. Bones are also classified by shape as long bones like the femur and phalanges, short bones like the carpals and patella, flat bones, or irregularly shaped bones.
Bone tissue
The skeletal system is composed of bones and associated tissues that provide structure, support, protection, movement, and mineral storage. Bones are living organs composed of cells and an extracellular matrix. There are two main types of bones - compact bone, which forms the dense outer layer, and spongy bone, which forms the inner layer. The skeletal system develops through two main processes - intramembranous ossification and endochondral ossification.
