This document provides the assignment requirements for a four-page research paper on an artwork based on a myth from classical mythology. Students must choose a relevant artwork, discuss its historical and cultural context, the myth it depicts, symbolic elements within the artwork, and how modern media reflects similar themes. The paper must be double-spaced in 12-point Arial font with 1-inch margins and cite at least five sources using MLA style citations and a Works Cited page. An optional draft is due on April 3rd and the final paper is due on April 17th.

The proposal / research outline:
Your proposal should provide three things:
List the specific genre you have chosen which is:
B. Literature Review. Write about a farm-related issue and show where the issue sits currently, using a minimum of 10 sources / authors. ( Literature Review. Study the conversation surrounding your chosen topic and explain to the reader the current views on a topic from a variety of sources. This choice requires a minimum of ten sources and ten to twelve written pages, not counting the name block and Works Cited page)
2. Why you chose this particular project. Why is this the perfect project for YOU?
3. How will this project contribute to your understanding of the farm in literature and agriculture?
OUTLINE
I recommend you use the stasis theory found at https:( //owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/736/01/ ) to create a brief research outline for a literature analysis paper or fieldwork.
For a literature review, you should create a research outline that begins with the following:
Topic introduction
Major questions and/or debates about the topic
Major commentary (Authors or major articles on the topic you know about)
Areas for further inquiry
Remember that outlines are dynamic. I expect them to change over time as you conduct your farm research and narrow your thesis.
you will be graded on:
Displays solid research including credible traditional and electronic sources. Provides in-depth study and understanding of those sources and their themes through history, civilization(s) and culture(s).
Your work thoroughly analyzes a very narrow topic related to farm with an explication connecting it to specific examples of literature in the humanities (written, art, film, textiles, folklore practices and material culture) that focuses on agriculture. Develops complex ideas that go beyond surface reading.
Assignment connects your own thoughts about farm literature with at least two specific required readings from the course by comparing, contrasting, and analyzing texts with primary and secondary sources you discovered, demonstrating understanding and awareness (cultural literacy) of American society through the lens of agriculture.
Paper articulates your thoughts and knowledge through a solid thesis with supporting topic sentences in paragraphs that are well-developed, use proper grammar, and employ terms common in the agricultural disciplines.
Visual Imagery. Illustrate a point in your work that may not be adequately portrayed by words. Caption included and source cited.

Exhibition Proposal Due Friday, December 6thA museum exhibit.docxgitagrimston
Exhibition Proposal
Due Friday, December 6th
A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Much like an academic paper, an effective exhibition makes an argument, using works of art as evidence for its thesis. Furthermore, an exhibition creates meaning through the arrangement of works of art in space. By sequencing works in a certain way, the exhibition’s organizer, or curator, structures the viewer’s understanding of the its subject.
This assignment asks you to create your own art exhibition devoted to a topic of your choosing, consisting of at least four works of art. Unlike your museum paper, this paper does require library research. Your final paper should have the following format:
I. Introductory paragraph: Introduce your reader to your exhibition’s topic. Describe its historical significance (in other words, why was this exhibition worth organizing? what can be learned from seeing it?) and state your thesis.
II. Checklist: Write at least two paragraphs for each work of art in your exhibition. Each entry in your checklist should contain a short formal analysis of the work and describe how it relates to your thesis. Consider how the sequencing of works in your exhibition affects the development of your argument.
III. Conclusion: This paragraph should not simply restate your thesis. What have we learned from your exhibition? What were the consequences of the works you have chosen? How do these works point to future art historical developments?
Requirements
1) Email me ([email protected]) with a potential topic by Wednesday, November 6th. You are not bound to this topic, but it is important to start thinking about this early, so that you can begin searching for sources during our library session.
2) Your research must make use of published sources (i.e. books and journals) and may also include appropriate online material. Best practices for internet research will be discussed in our library session.
3) Your paper must include color reproductions of the works included in your exhibition. Images should be captioned with the following information: artist, title (in italics), date, medium.
4) Your paper must include properly formatted citations and a bibliography. Details on formatting will be discussed either in class or in our library session.
Formatting: Papers are to be word processed, double-spaced, with standard margins. Titles of works of art are to be italicized. Your exhibition must have a title (“Research Paper” is not a title). Reproductions of your works of art should be in ...

Research Assignment Stage 1
Assignment: This is the birth of your major project for this semester. To begin, you will do a little digging. Consider what about this period is of particular interest to you, what do you have questions about when you consider the late 18thC/early 19thC (1790-1820). Now, find an object/artwork around which you can base your line of inquiry. Finally, start investigating sources that will help you along the way.
This assignment includes your bibliography, including at least 4 preliminary sources (1 of which must be a primary source) as well as a short abstract introducing your proposed project. This must introduce your object and may ask the questions you are looking to unpack.
ALSO - indicate if you will give a
presentation or written essay for Stage 3.
The Specifics:
· Ensure that your name, student number, course number, and word count for your abstract (300-400 words) all appear on the first page.
· Ensure your citations (footnotes and bibliography) are consistent. There is a link to this on BrightSpace.
· This assignment assesses your ability to follow instructions, conduct research, and begin a line of original inquiry. I will be looking for at least 4 different sources.
· Plagiarism
WILL NOTbe tolerated. See your syllabus and the University of Victoria Calendar for details. Understanding what constitutes plagiarism is your responsibility and is vital as it could result in a failing grade or worse.
Due:
October 4, 2022, 2pm You will submit your work via BrightSpace in .pdf, .doc or .docx format. Failure to do this (if I have to chase you up for formatting) will result in a 1% deduction. This is worth 15% of your final grade; please review my lateness policies.

Art Analysis Project: Non-Western Art
ARTS 1301 ~ Dr. Foltz
This semester, you and your group will complete a four-stage project about the art of one
non-Western culture (chosen in class). This project fulfills the SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
and TEAMWORK core objectives set by the THECB and El Centro College.
This project is completed in stages:
1. Formal Analysis (museum visit)
2. Research Paper
3. Group Culture Wiki Entry
4. Final Paper (combination of previous steps + group analysis)
Due dates for all work are found in eCampus.
STAGE 1: FORMA.
Assignment 2: Project Paper
Due Week 8 and worth 200 points
The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.
Note
: Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.
For the topic you choose:
Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic requires you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information.
Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources with one (1) source being the class text.
Note:
Wikipedia
and other similar Websites do not quality as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.
Topic choices (pick 1):
Self-Portraits.
Journal.
The Renaissance artists Titian, Rembrandt, and Durer have each painted self-portraits. Imagine yourself as one of these artists (or another artist of your choice that has painted a self-portrait) and write a journal expressing your thoughts on “your” art (in other words, the journal entries the artist would probably write.) (1) Explain “your” primary reason for painting a self-portrait. (2) Describe “your” artistic choices in composition: use of color, space, etc. (3) Explain what the portrait represents about “you” (as the artist.) (4) Explain “your” choices of subject with regard to at least three other specific pieces “you” have painted.
Ladies & Gentlemen.
Survey & Report.
Some may believe that being “gentleman” or a “lady” in today’s society is an outdated notion, but others may disagree. (1) Briefly summarize the main characteristics of a well-rounded person, “l’uomo universal,” referring to specific sections within the excerpt from
The Courtier
which identifies these characteristics. (2) Create a “survey” based on the identified characteristics and “poll” at least ten people to find out whether or not the characteristics are rel.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT 2
CONTEXUTALIZING A WORK OF ART
This assignment involves putting the work of art you chose for Assignment 1
back into its historical and cultural context. This paper should be
approximately 5-6 pages in length (SEE General Information & Writing
Guidelines on Blackboard for further format instructions).
v GOALS: You are not looking to study the specific work of art you wrote
about for Paper #1 so much as to relate it to its broader cultural context. In
fact, you are not likely to find information directly about the Houston work.
[If you do, be sure you also answer the following bigger questions] This
assignment asks you to discuss the subject and the religious, social, and
political or other cultural context of the work of art you wrote about in
Assignment 1 in order to put it back into that context.
o CRITICAL THINKING: As you do your research and look again at the
work you selected to write about, be sure to define a thesis to guide
you. The thesis could be a question or a particular issue that you want
to find out about in relation to this object. ALSO: Think about the
sources you are using as making an argument, not only as sources
of information. What assumptions might they be making? Do different
sources give different perspectives on the work or its role in its
culture? What do you find compelling or, in contrast, not convincing
based on what you have learned in the course.
v RESEARCH: What does the object tell us about the culture and people
from which it comes?
v TIP: Think of taking the work out of the museum and putting it back into
the world from which it came. INTEGRATE the visual analysis of the
work you did for your first assignment (revised, using feedback from the
grader, and selected to be relevant) into a new paper that explains how
the work of art you chose reflects its original cultural context. DO NOT CUT
AND PASTE your previous paper word for word.
v RESEARCH TIPS & PREPARATION FOR WRITING
LOOK FOR THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION
Ø ID the type of work you wrote about for Assignment 1 and the parts of
its culture to which it relates. Since you are not likely to find many (if
2
any) sources that deal directly with the exact object you are working
on, these will be your starting points for research
Ø TO GUIDE YOUR RESEARCH & WRITING, CONSIDER THE
FOLLOWING QUESTIONS in relation to your work of art:
o What kind of function or purpose might this work have served for its
culture and what did it mean for the people of that culture?
§ Was the work connected to the culture’s religious practices or
beliefs?
§ Is it related to the political structure or to power politics?
§ Is it related to the social structure of the society?
§ Is it connected with specific historical events or circumstances of
the work’s time and place?
§ Be specific about the social, cultural ideas, experiences, or
values the piece reflects
o Investigate the subject .

Final Project, Part 2. Development of the Topic.
This part of the final project is a summary of your ongoing work on the final paper; it should include three paragraphs, one covering each selected work. You should also make sure to re-state what your subject is.
Identify how the subject you chose in Part 1 appears in three different examples, each from a different Humanities discipline (visual art, music, dance, poetry, prose, theater, film, religion). For instance, you could choose a poem, a painting and a scene from a film, all of which express and represent the theme of anger. Or, to be even more specific, if you choose the emotion of "love," the final paper could analyze and discuss love as it is expressed in Shakespeare's Sonnet 147 (literature), Boticelli's Birth of Venus (visual art), and in the ballet Swan Lake (dance).
Write one short paragraph (3-5 sentences) about
each
of your selections in which you:
Identify a reliable and appropriate example (a good-quality image, recording, video, etc.).
Identify and cite the source, including the artist, creator etc. as well as where you found the example.
Explain why you find the example relevant for this assignment.
Identify one tool, concept or method from the Learning Resources you might be able to use to talk about it.
STOP:
Before you hand in your assignment, make sure to ask yourself the following questions:
Have I chosen three examples from three different fields of the Humanities?
Are each of the examples I chose specific, reliable, appropriate, relevant to my topic?
Have I offered an explanation for each example that offers a reason for including it?
Have I provided a specific and appropriate interpretative tool, concept or method that I will likely use to interpret each example?
Have I provided a list of resources and do all of my citations conform to MLA 8th edition guidelines?
Have I proofread this assignment for grammatical, structural, and spelling errors?
For your final project, you will choose a subject, find three expressions of that subject in three different Humanities disciplines, describe the three different presentations, and offer an analysis of each of your choices.
Due Dates
Part 1: Selection of Topic due at the end of Week 3
Part 2: Development of your topic due at the end of Week 6
Part 3: Paper due at the end of Week 8
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the concepts and skills you have learned during the semester for how to analyze works within the Humanities.
Skills
This assignment will help you practice the following skills that will be useful to you in your professional and personal life beyond school.
Research, select, and describe appropriate examples
Organize materials around a specific theme
Use concepts and skills learned in class to develop analytical skills
Use appropriate and proper grammar, organization, and academic-style formatting in.

ART 101:
FORM AND IDEA
MUSEUM ESSAY
All students will be required to visit the Tampa Museum of Art, the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, the
Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, or the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota. Students will write a minimum
1500 word research paper (approx. 5 pages in length) based on one artwork of their choosing from the
museum to investigate in further detail. The completed paper is due at the beginning of class on the assigned
due date (see course syllabus for deadlines).
This assignment will require students to a thoughtful analysis based on accepted research as well as your own
developed point of view. Completed essays will be sustained thesis-driven interpretations of a single artwork
based on scholarly research (three sources minimum are required).
When selecting your artwork, pick the one that appeals to you and that you want to further examine. (Keep in
mind that you may want to select an object that has already had significant scholarly research within art
history.) A brief visual analysis of the selected artwork will ultimately support your thesis and lend credence to
your research. Meaning, your discussion of the artist’s selection and use of the visual elements and principles
of design should connect to your broader knowledge of style and pictorial culture, as we have discussed them
in class lecture. Your analysis should also move from description to interpretation as it relates to your central
argument – i.e., the particular qualities of the medium (ceramic, sculpture, painting, etc.) and how this relates
to the artist’s content or culture; how the visual elements found in the artwork reflect (or were affected by)
important cultural values found in the society in which it was made; how the work confronts the human
condition or experience of its culture; the expressive significance of formal elements, spatial design, or motifs
and their interaction; or how the artist has used visual elements to communicate a particular
message/experience to his/her viewers.

Osceola Campus – Building 2, Room 232 · Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:30 – 2:45 PM
Research Project Assignment
For your research project this term, you will choose an artwork that is based on a legend or myth
from Classical mythology. After receiving your artwork, you will be required to create a four-page,
research-based essay.
Structure & Contents
1. Title Page (Unnumbered): Include your name, the title of your paper, the course, and the
date
2. First Page
a. Introduction of Essay: Discuss the essential nature of art, myth, or story for human
beings. What is the most important function that they serve? How have those
functions changed over time? How have they stayed the same?
b. Introduction of Artwork: Based on the previous paragraph, how does your artwork
fit into the framework of human history? Who created it? When? Where? From what
materials? Discuss historical context, artist biography, and technical innovations in
this section. (This section may continue on to your second page as necessary).
3. Second Page – Third Page
a. What is the story, myth, or legend being depicted in the artwork? Do not simply
limit yourself to the scene being shown in the work – be sure to give background
and context concerning both the characters involved in the scene and the setting in
which the scene takes place.
b. Also discuss the society that created the myth upon which the artwork is based, and
how the story, myth, or legend being shown may or may not be representative of
that society’s ideals, principles, or beliefs.
4. Third Page
a. Identify and discuss in detail the various symbols that artist includes within the
artwork that allow the viewer to obtain a greater understanding of the scene
depicted, or its societal importance; they may take the form of animals, colors,
2. fruits or vegetables, characters, plants, objects, geographical features, or even
people.
b. Be sure to consult texts discussing artistic symbolism when delving into this portion
of your discussion.
5. Fourth Page
a. Identify and illustrate contemporary examples of the artwork’s theme as evidenced
in today’s popular media.
b. Explain how the themes and concerns of the Classical world are not terribly
different than those of modern society. You may choose to illustrate this point
using examples from cinema, music, television, or electronic games.
c. Conclusion: Discuss why the information, themes, and symbolism discussed within
your paper are important. Do not introduce any new subjects for discussion and do
not simply summarize your essay for the reader. Instead, let your reader know what
he or she should have learned or understood from having read your work.
6. Works Cited Page (Unnumbered)
Formatting Specifications
1. Your essay should be four full body pages, not including the cover & Works Cited pages
2. Its text should be double-spaced, and set in size 12 Arial font
3. The pages should have standard 1 inch margins on all four sides
4. MLA Citation Style must be used to document your sources by:
a. Using in-text parenthetical citations
b. Including a fully-realized MLA-formatted Works Cited page at the end of your essay,
including all works cited in-text
5. You must use a minimum of 5 different sources
6. The only sources you may use are books or periodicals from a library, or articles from a
database
7. Your essay must also have a cover page affixed to the front
8. The four-page minimum does NOT include either your cover page or Works Cited page
9. You may turn in one working draft for my feedback via email on Monday, April 3rd.
10. Your finished, typed, stapled essay will be due at the beginning of class on Monday, April 17th.
