HUD Secretary Proposes to Triple Rent
American’s Poorest Pay for Subsidized
Housing
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson has proposed extensive changes to
federal housing subsidies, tripling rent for the poorest households, and making it easier for housing authorities to
impose work requirements. This action comes as the administration makes moves to reform welfare. President
Trump has released an executive order, Reducing Poverty in America by Promoting Opportunity and Economic
Mobility, which aims to add additional work requirements to bene ts and double down on eligibility and duplicity
of programs. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), the group that will be mostly
effected is single mothers, which includes approximately one million children.
Another report published by CBPP stated that working families, the elderly, and people with disabilities would
pay more than three-fourths of the total $3.2 billion increase, forcing them to divert money from other basic
needs, and putting some of them at risk of eviction and homelessness.
The Alliance Public Policy team is engaging in educating legislators and the administration on how important a
solid foundation, or building blocks, are to achieving self-suf ciency, economic mobility, and well-being. Housing
