The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) advocates for the support and expansion of syringe services programs (SSPs) to reduce the transmission of HIV, viral hepatitis, and other blood-borne diseases among people who inject drugs. NACCHO calls for the removal of legal barriers to accessing sterile syringes, enhanced drug treatment accessibility, and federal support for these health interventions due to their proven effectiveness in preventing infections and facilitating treatment. A comprehensive public health approach including SSPs is necessary to address ongoing health issues related to injection drug use, including rising hepatitis C infections and increasing overdose fatalities.
