Leadership in the professional services industryAshraf Engineer
Leadership in the professional services industry is tough.
Law firms, BFSI firms, money management agencies, management consultants, advertising firms, etc, face unique challenges. Not only do they face tremendous client pressure, there is also a serious talent challenge. As a result, leaders are often forced to give up leading for managing.
However, never has leadership been more critical for professional services firms. It is vital for such firms' long-term survival.
* This is a presentation I put together for our firm's co-founder a couple of months ago.
The 20th century elevated consumption to be central and critical to the economic system, occurring as a consequence of the way production and labor were organized. But by the dawn of the new century, developed societies were grappling with the challenge of creating a more humane form of consumption, driven by three major forces: lower labor demands in technological industry, erosion of the social contract, and the environmental costs of reckless consumption on increasingly scarce natural resources.

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

What students of all cultures, especially Asian students, use today is their phones to communicate all of the time. They are not shy on the phone or even on Facebook for that matter.
One of the most common challenges we often face in the classroom is the differences in class participation. I think we all know the traditional teaching methods in Asia are focused on lectures and students are better seen and not heard. Couple that with the issue of “face” and the fear of answer a question incorrectly or making a comment that singles out yourself, and the result is silence in the class. However, the Asian culture is a collective culture and the fear can be alleviated if the students feel they can answer questions as a group.
So, my solutions are as follows:
Allow the students to answer after consulting other students around them. It takes longer, but it gets participation
Allow SMS messages with questions to be sent to me during class. I check them at the end of class or a break.
