Hernia repair may be the most common surgical procedure by a practicing surgeon today. It is apt that hernia management is an area that a surgeon ought to be comfortable with. After introduction of laparoscopic / endoscopic hernia repair, lot of debate has been generated. A group of like minded hernia enthusiasts from the Asia Pacific region joined hands together and Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) was formed in September 2004 at Singapore. The Hernia Society of India (National Chapter of Asia Pacific Hernia Society) is created to propagate the aims and missions of the parent society in India. The object of the Society shall be to promote and advance the teaching and research in hernia surgery in India and the Indian subcontinent.

Conference Report: UNESCO, in partnership with Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) organised a national Conference on Opening up by Closing the Circle: Strengthening Open Access in India. The event was organised at JNU, New Delhi on 21st October, 2013 to mark the Open Access Week.
The organisers intended to focus on the need to create an enabling environment for open access (OA) in India, promote and upscale existing OA initiatives, and encourage the development of new OA programmes. This was planned to do by ‘closing the circle’ or linking multiple stakeholder groups, viz. researchers, librarians, archivists, publishers, technologists, authors and policymakers, taking into account their concerns and views and providing a platform to advocate for a common cause.

Strengthening Open Access in India (Conference Report)
Conference Report: UNESCO, in partnership with Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) organised a national Conference on Opening up by Closing the Circle: Strengthening Open Access in India. The event was organised at JNU, New Delhi on 21st October, 2013 to mark the Open Access Week.
The organisers intended to focus on the need to create an enabling environment for open access (OA) in India, promote and upscale existing OA initiatives, and encourage the development of new OA programmes. This was planned to do by ‘closing the circle’ or linking multiple stakeholder groups, viz. researchers, librarians, archivists, publishers, technologists, authors and policymakers, taking into account their concerns and views and providing a platform to advocate for a common cause.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

- 1. Hernia repair may be the most common surgical procedure by a practicing surgeon today. It is apt that hernia management is an area that a surgeon ought to be comfortable with. After introduction of laparoscopic / endoscopic hernia repair, lot of debate has been generated. A group of like minded hernia enthusiasts from the Asia Pacific region joined hands together and Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) was formed in September 2004 at Singapore. The Hernia Society of India (National Chapter of Asia Pacific Hernia Society) is created to propagate the aims and missions of the parent society in India. The object of the Society shall be to promote and advance the teaching and research in hernia surgery in India and the Indian subcontinent. The First National Hernia Congress and Live Workshop of Hernia Society of India was held between 14th to 16th December 2007 at New Delhi. The association has grown to over 700 members. Dr. M. G. Bhat, Senior Surgeon from Bangalore and Medical Director of Nova Medical Centers Pvt Ltd, took over as the president of the Hernia Society of India at the 6 th National Conference of the HIS in Coonoor on 3rd Feb 2013.
