How to quote Shakespeare
To cite Shakespeare, indicate the Act, Scene and
line numbers in brackets.
Example:
• To console Hermia after Theseus’s judgment, Lysander says “The
course of true love never did run smooth” (I.i.136)
• Acts are indicated with capitalized Roman numerals: I (1), II (2), III
(3), IV (4), V (5)
• Scenes are indicated in lower case Roman numerals: i (Scene 1) ii
(Scene 2)
• Lines numbers are listed from beginning line of the quote to the end (136-140)
• If you are quoting more than three lines, you will need to indent your quotation
