When writing your LinkedIn profile, some people
have been told to just copy everything from their
resume. Or vice-versa. Is that recommended?
Short answer: No.
Is Your LinkedIn = Your Resume?

An effective resume needs to be customized to specific job opportunities.
Your focus when applying for a job should be to persuade a recruiter that
your skills and experience match the job requirements.
Unless you plan on updating the content of your LinkedIn profile for every
job that you apply for, the content you export won’t be aligned with
recruiters’ needs.
You will be sending the recruiter a long list of past responsibilities and
experiences that may or may not be relevant to the prospective position.
Long Answer

A better strategy than simply using your
LinkedIn profile as a resume is to use it as the
launching point for a position-specific,
customized resume.
One of the luxuries of LinkedIn is that you have
almost infinite space for listing all of the great
things you’ve done in past roles, along with
other skills and achievements.
Our advice is to take advantage of this space,
especially since your resume space is more
constrained.
How to Improve Your LinkedIn Profile

Like most social media websites, LinkedIn has a
variety of different privacy and visibility options.
When you go to your LinkedIn profile page, in the
top right corner, you will find a button called “Edit
public profile & URL”.
This is where you will find the options to select what
elements of your profile can be viewed by whom,
including your LinkedIn contacts, other LinkedIn
members, or the general public who may come
across your profile through Google searches.

Perfect your LinkedIn profile content
According to LinkedIn, profiles with headshots
are 14 times more likely to be viewed than those
without a profile picture. Your headshot should
be clear, professional and only include you.
Update Your Profile Picture
Unlike a resume summary statement, the
LinkedIn summary is longer and lets you create
a powerful image of yourself with more words.

Don’t overlook the importance of this simple
information. For privacy reasons, you may not
want to include your phone number or direct
e-mail under this section, unless you restrict the
visibility of your profile to personal contacts.

One of the elements you almost certainly won’t
be able to add to your resume is a series of
endorsements from current or past co-workers.
Get endorsements and recommendations

Extra Skills – Make sure to fill out your
“Skills” section with all 50 slots allowed.
Why? These will help you appear in more
searches that recruiters and employers run.
Recommendations - This is one of the most
powerful ways to immediately signal to
employers that you’re great at what you do.
Attachments/Case Studies – You can attach all
kinds of documents to your profile in various
places, including under specific jobs you’ve
held.
Add Some Sections Your Resume Doesn’t Have
Some great sections you can add:

The first describes THE person you’re
looking for. They possess all the relevant
skills and experiences, and they’re
accurately listed in the resume.
The second MIGHT be the person you’re
looking for, but you’re just not sure. They
seem to have some relevant experience,
but not others.

Mention achievements over job responsibilities/tasks and tailor them if
possible for each job accordingly, something that cannot be done on
LinkedIn.
See the difference? The first example shows that you’re a high achiever.
The second shows that you’re a sales manager.

How? Well, let’s look at the following job ad:

Now, to tailor your resume to these requirements, all you’d have to do is mention in your resume that
you:
If your resume mentions all the essential job requirements, there’s no reason for
the hiring manager NOT to call you back!
Add Some Sections Your Resume Doesn’t Have
“Have 5+ years of experience in online marketing.” You can mention this in your resume summary.
“Have experience with social media marketing.” This can go in either the “Skills” or “Work Experience” section.
“Have a B.A. in marketing or business.” This, of course, belongs in the education section.
“Have experience in managing $20,000+ monthly
ad budget on Facebook.”
You can mention this in either Work Experience or Resume
Summary

As a given, make sure you don’t mention
anything that’s not directly related to your
job.
For example, no one cares about your
content marketing skills if you’re applying
to work as a Software Developer.
When scanning your resume, one of the most important things hiring managers look for is whether you
have the right skills or not.
You can usually figure out which ones are worth mentioning by scanning the job ad.
Tailor Your Skills to The Job Position

Your professional title should be the job title you’re
applying for word-for-word.
Ditch the buzzwords - no hiring manager likes those.

Once you put your name at the top of your resume, it’s already implied that
everything you mention in your resume applies to you.
So, there is no need to unnecessarily repeat “I did…” in your resume countless times.

Don’t Use Personal Pronouns (“I”, “Me”)

A gap in your resume can be a huge red flag -
but only if you don’t address it.
The hiring manager is going to assume the
worst by default. So, it’s a good idea to be
direct and insert 2-3 sentences acknowledging
the gap and explaining what happened.
