Kim Perell has been a successful entrepreneur and investor for 15 years. She published her first book, The Execution Factor, in 2018, explaining that the ability to execute is the difference between success and failure. Throughout her career, Kim Perell has navigated the business world successfully by overcoming her fears. In a post on her website kimperell.com, the entrepreneur explains to readers how to effectively overcome the fear of failure that gets in the way of becoming productive. In business, the fear of failure can prevent someone from launching a business or even setting goals to try new things. Overcoming one’s fear of failure can be accomplished, but the individual has to be willing to submit to a few activities. First, the person has to acknowledge the fear itself. Fear is a natural human emotion, and when shared with others, it can provide perspective to an issue, in some cases helping the person feel more capable. The second way to manage fear of failure is to not turn on oneself, or internalize the failure. The common response to failure is to associate it with a personal characteristic, seeing oneself as a failure and connecting it to one’s self-worth. However, the opposite is true in that a person who fails at something can still be smart and competent. As opposed to focusing on the whole project (which can be overwhelming), making measurable goals can be one way to move a project in a more productive direction while at the same time creating a positive atmosphere. Achievable, short-term goals can lead to more successful outcomes. Finally, successful people learn from their behaviors. In fact, these failures are often a part of learning from past missteps and challenges, and as opposed to being viewed as simply failures, they are a part of forming the foundation for future success.
