1. HOW TO REPLACE ORGANIC (NON-METALLIC) AIRCRAFT BRAKE LININGS STEP 1 When you have finished viewing this presentation, use the “CAPS” program found on the home page of www.apex- inc .biz . Select the proper brake linings for your aircraft. Tools needed to perform this task can be found under “ Aircraft Brake Tools & Supplies ” towards the bottom right of the web page.

2. STEP 2 Two types of bolts are used to attach the back plate to the brake assembly/caliper. 1. Drilled bolts, which require safety wire. 2. Patch lock bolts (nylon material embedded in threaded end) which require replacement after 6 or 8 installations or whenever the bolt can be run in past the locking feature by use of fingers only.

3. STEP 3 Remove bolts from brake assembly/caliper by removing safety wire if necessary and slide brake assembly off alignment pins. *DO NOT remove brake assembly from hydraulic line. Remove pressure plate from brake assembly.

4. STEP 4 Remove brake linings from pressure/back plates by punching out the old rivets using the 824 brake rivet tool or equivalent. Clean pressure and back plate surfaces of dirt, grease, etc. before installing new linings.

5. STEP 4 (Continued) Inspect pressure plate and back plate for excessive corrosion, visible damage or excessive warping. CAUTION: Pressure plate should not be used if warped in excess of .010 inch flatness. Excessive warping can result in brake drag, especially when new disc and linings are installed. For excessive warping, use the draw flattening technique to remove warpage.

7. STEP 5 Align new replacement lining on pressure/back plates and install rivets using rivet set tool.

8. STEP 6 Check to be sure lining is tight and movement free and that no distortion of parts has occurred. When tubular rivets are used, splits may result from the clinching (hammering) operation. CAUTION: Check for acceptable rivet installation.

10. STEP 7 Clean dirt, grease, etc. from caliper and portion of piston extending beyond caliper face, push piston back into caliper. Lubricate alignment pins with dry film lubricant (silicone spray.) DO NOT use grease or oil. Slide pressure plate with new linings over alignment pins and install caliper.

11. STEP 8 Install back plate attachment bolts and washers into caliper. Install back plates between brake disc and wheel/tire and start back plate attachment bolts and washers into back plates.

12. STEP 9 Using the CAPS program, you can get your brake assembly part number and then use the torque value chart to torque the brake assembly bolts. If the bolts used are drilled, safety wire the bolts with .032 stainless steel safety wire as shown. Now may be a good time to check the brake hydraulic fluid level.
