Executive Summary
Objective
The objective of this research project is to understand the factors that affect the footfall that
XLRI receives during the time of the annual management festival - Ensemble. Our research
problem focuses on the responses that these kind of fests receive from both within as well as
outside the college. The results would help us to find the reasons why people avoid these fests
and thus provide solutions to attract them to attend the various events held during the other
fests also.
Research Methodology
After defining the main decision problem, we have further identified 3 broad research problems
in which we have defined research questions with defined set of hypothesis. To gauge the
effectiveness of these hypothesis, a set of questions have been developed to get answers
regarding these research questions, the data set of which would be then analysed further to
arrive at a solution for our main decision problem.
Conclusion
The findings of this research would enable the organizers to create and design the events in the
fests in such a manner that they attract much more of the crowd than they currently do. A higher
participation would ensure higher revenues and thus a successful fest.

Introduction
Xavier’s School of Management was established in 1949 and has been one of the top
management institutes since then. The college is situated in about 40 acres of land in
Jamshedpur, the steel city in Jharkhand. It offers full time programs to about 1000 students,
spread across several categories of management. Since the exhaustive curriculum of these
programs mandates the students to live in the residences on the campus, extracurricular
activities are an integral part of their lives which gives rise to several events that occur round
the year as part of college festivals or ‘fests’. These fests also invite participation from other
MBA schools across India besides the local crowd of Jamshedpur.
Some of the major festivals that occur throughout the year have been mentioned below:
1) Valhalla
Valhalla is a sports and cultural fest that is held usually during the last weekend of July. The
fest invites participation primarily from other premier business schools across India in an array
of sports and cultural events. There are 7 sports that are played in the round robin format, with
each culminating in a final. Apart from this, the cultural part of the festival includes
competitions across dramatics, quizzes, singing and dancing. It also includes professional
performances or ‘ProShows’, where famous groups or individuals are called to perform. In
total the fest organizes about 50 events, and generates a footfall of about 3000 people.
2) Ensemble
Ensemble is the premier management fest of XLRI. Launched in 2001, it has attracted
participation from several business schools across the country. The fest primarily focuses on
co-curricular competitions spread across different formats like debating, case studies, quizzes
etc. Over the last few years the competition has focused on specific ideas around which the
entire fest is then built. The fest offers a very high prize money to the winners and the runners
up across its several competitions. The fest is held around mid-November culminating in a
grand proshow.
3) XL UTSAV
XL UTSAV is an event conducted by Acadcom to bridge the gap between students and
faculties and a step in many to help us imbibe the famous XL Culture. It combines various
facets like sports, cultural performances and regional flavours to make it a memorable day in
the life of an XLer. The day kicks off with faculty and students facing each other off in a
number of sporting events. We see healthy competition between the two and little bit of banter
thrown around. In the evening a mini India descends on the grounds of XLRI as various
regional committees set up food stalls offering regional lip smacking regional delicacies. The
night caps off with a cultural performance from both students and faculties which adds the
icing on the cake. It is one day where the faculty lets their hair down and soaks in the
atmosphere that the event manages to create.
4) XL-IIMC
What started as a sports fest to bridge the gap between the 2 elite institutions in the region has
now completely transformed into the most heated and intense rivalry that any 2 institutes can
possibly share. An event conducted by SportsCom, the popularity of the event can be gauged
BRM Project Group-3
4 | P a g e
from the fact that the first question alumni of either institutes ask upon meeting is that who is
winning the XL-IIMC meet these days. It is considered the mother of all B school sports fests
as the 2 teams battle it out on a wide variety of sporting events like athletics, chess, football,
pool etc. The event is just not limited to action on the field as what transpires off it also plays
a crucial role in deciding the fortunes of the teams. Sledging is a weapon used by either teams’
continent to unsettle the nerves of the players and push them towards making mistakes. It is
one event where the entire batch comes together against a common foe and passions run at
extremely high levels. The overall score of the meet stands at 37-9 in favour of IIMC. However,
XLRI has been making up lost ground by winning the last 3 meets that were held. A legacy
that binds XLers of all ages, it is one event that is bookmarked in the calendars’ of possibly
every Xler and pushes them to give more than 100 percent on and off the field.
5) TedX
TED is a non-profit organisation which devotes itself to spreading ideas in the form of short
talks by eminent speakers. It started off in 1984 where speakers of Technology, Entertainment
and Design converged under the same roof to discuss and propagate their ideas. Today it
encompasses almost all topics ranging from science to global issues and is now a global
community. TEDx is a concept used by TED to spread their innovative where x stands for an
independent event. So this year’s TEDxXLRI had 8 eminent speakers (Rasika Shekhar, Anand
Pillai, Rajiv Jayaraman etc.) from diverse backgrounds. Rasia Shekhar even enchanted the
crowd by delivering a magical performance that left many spellbound and asking for more. An
event organised by CII-YI XLRI, it is an event where people are stimulated by the powerful
talks and are sometimes pushed to introspect. TedxXLRI is at a nascent stage as this was the
3rd
edition of the event. An event that is anticipated by many on the campus, the event is only
going to get bigger and better.
6) Maxi Fair
MAXI Fair is a unique concept and perhaps the most distinctive and renowned fest in XLRI.
Conducted by the Marketing Association of XLRI (MAXI), it is the largest marketing event
conducted by a student body in the country. The concept of a marketing research event
disguised as a fair open to the general public to gather massive amounts of marketing research
data has been very well received by the corporate sector and academicians alike. It was
introduced by Prof Sharad Sarin in 1979, and has been emulated in other B-schools such as
IIM-A, IIM-L and University of Rhode Island. The fair operates with a myriad of attractions,
popular entertainment and fun events, just like any other fest, and attracts a massive footfall
from the Jamshedpur public. However the elements of disguised marketing research are
employed by the stalls and events, which indirectly incorporate actual research questions. This
prompts unbiased responses and that too by a large strata of the Jamshedpur public. This is a
unique and irreplaceable source of research for a lot of companies because of the unbiased
nature of data collection from the third party, namely MAXI. This valuable data has been
analyzed and implemented by a lot of companies such as HUL, Nestle, RB, Pepsi etc. in either
changing their product message, packaging etc. or introducing entirely new segments, such as
Nestea.

Research Framework
Research Proposal
Most of the fests mentioned above require involvement of some specific colleges or local
crowds. However Ensemble is the only fest that can have participation from any number of
colleges. Thus our survey would try and work out the issues surrounding the primary annual
fest of XLRI, giving us our Management Decision Problem (MDP):
“How can we increase participation in XLRI’s annual management festival - Ensemble?”
Research Objectives
We have identified 3 major research problems and corresponding hypothesis to address the
problem at hand. They have been mentioned below.
Research Problem 1:
What are the different factors that influence other B-School students to attend Ensemble?
 Research Question 1: Does the participation of other B-school students depend upon the
time it takes by train for the outside students to reach XLRI, Jamshedpur?
o H1: If it takes less than 5 hours, students travel to attend Ensemble
o H2: If it takes more than 25 hours, students will not take the pain to attend Ensemble
 Research Question 2: Does the pro-shows of artists attract other B-School students to
Ensemble?
o H3: Popularity of the artist will garner more participation in the overall fest
o H4: International artists relate better with B-School students, increasing participation.
o H5: If the flagship event is Rock-show by established bands, participation increases.
o H6: Exclusivity of the performance of the artist in comparison to other places will
increase the participation
 Research Question 3: Does the location of XLRI discourage participation from other B-
School students?
o H7: If Jamshedpur offers recreational options relevant to B-School Students,
participation will increase
o H8: Direct connectivity between B-School cities & Jamshedpur increases participation
in events
 Research Question 4: What factor is the most important and least important which
influence other B-School students to participate in Ensemble?
o H9: All factors which influence other B-School Students are equal
 Research Question 5: What are the demographic factors which influence participation
in Ensemble?
BRM Project Group-3
6 | P a g e
o H10: A girl will attend Ensemble only if some other girl from the same B-School will
participate.
Research Problem 2
What are the multiple factors that increases participation of XLRI students in Ensemble?
 Research Question 1: Do the dates of Ensemble affect the participation of XLers in
Ensemble?
o H11: If Ensemble is held during major Indian religious festivals, students will chose to
go home rather than participate in events.
o H12: If the student has a submission within 2 days of end of Ensemble, he/she will not
participate.
 Research Question 2: Do XLers choose to participate in events on the basis of their
friends’ participation?
o H13: XLers will choose to participate if their friends are also participating in same/other
events of Ensemble.
Research Problem 3
What are the various characteristics of events that attract participation in Ensemble?
 Research Question 1: Does the prize affect the participation?
o H14: If the prize money is less than 5000, outside B-School students will not participate.
o H15: If the prize money is more than 35000, outside B- school students will participate.
o H16: If the prize money is less than 3000 XLRI students will not participate.
o H17: If the prize money is more than 7000, XLRI students will participate.
o H18: If the winners get a PPO/PPI, the students will participate.
 Research Question 2: Does previous year participation in events affect the current year’s
participation?
o H19: If a B-School team won an event in the previous year, the B-school will participate.
o H20: If IIM A, B, C participated last year, then other B-School.
 Research Question 3: Does the structure of events affect participation?
o H21: If the event has more than 1 preliminary rounds, Students will not participate.
 Research Question 4: Does the presence of known personalities as judges affect
participation?
o H22: If the judge is a CXO from a known organization, students will participate.
BRM Project Group-3
7 | P a g e
 Research Question 5: What is the role of the sponsors’ brand in student participation?
o H23: If the reputed brands are sponsoring the event, students will participate.
Research Methodology
Literature Survey
Our hypothesis focuses on identifying the following factors which influence the decision of a
student (both XL and Non XL) to attend the fest:
1) Accessibility to Jamshedpur: The distance between the persons college and Jamshedpur
and the availability of direct and convenient means of transport to Jamshedpur plays an
important role in deciding whether to participate in the fest or not.
2) Dates of fest: Whether the dates of Ensemble lie close to that of any important festival or
around the exam schedule of the student’s college or around any other important B school
fest.
3) Format of the fest: This includes the type of competitions involved in the fest, their pattern
(i.e. number of preliminary rounds, number of judges and their credentials, sponsors, prize
money etc.) and type and scale of proshow being conducted.
4) Participation from other B-schools: Involvement of students from top B-schools in
different competitions plays an important part. Also the previous year’s winners and
participation from a student’s college will also affect his/her decision to attend the fest or
not.
Preliminary Research
As part of the preliminary research, we conducted in-depth interviews with the current and
previous conveners of ensemble in order to understand the factors which might be affecting
the decisions of students with respect to attending Ensemble. We also conducted interviews
with few students from XLRI, IIM A, IIM C, SIBM & IIFT. Based on these interviews, we
found out the following variables that affect the participation of students.

CONCLUSION
The objective of the research was to determine how to increase the participation in XLRI’s annual
management festival – Ensemble.
We first identified the research problem associated with our MDP and developed hypothesis against
which we would be checking our data. We had also identified various variables which were crucial in
event management of Ensemble and played important role in the minds of our audience as perception
variables. Afterwards, using the hypothesis we developed a questionnaire to gather responses which
we analyzed to accept/reject the hypothesis formulated earlier. We broadly classified the variables to
be tested as follows: Locational factors, Flagship events, other events, schedule and past experience of
the festival. Some of the finer factors tested through these variables are distance, connectivity,
travelling contexts, recreational activities in the location, prizes, sponsors, judges, preliminary rounds,
proshows, clash with important dates.
The questionnaire was floated amongst students from various colleges including XLRI, who had
attended or had knowledge about Ensemble. We received 75 responses and there on we went forward
with cleaning the data & deciding various tests to analyze the data and also to generate outputs in
order to accept/reject hypothesis and decide on the significance of variables.
Broadly, we found that outside B-School students rated prize money as the most important factor
followed by time taken to travel and travel location. Pro-show does not matter that much for outside
students while considering their participation in Ensemble. However, for XLRI Students, prize money
& number of preliminary rounds are not a big factor to be considered.

Research Questions and their Data Analysis
Research Problem 1:
What are the different factors that influence other B-School students to attend
Ensemble?
 Research Question 1: Does the participation of other B-school students depend upon
the time it takes by train for the outside students to reach XLRI, Jamshedpur?
o H1: If it takes less than 5 hours, students travel to attend Ensemble
Alternate Hypothesis (H1a) : Students will want to travel to attend Ensemble even if travel time
is not less than 5 hours
Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students how many hours they are willing to travel from
their own campuses to attend Ensemble. We want to ascertain if they are inclined to attend the
fest only if the travel time is less than 5 hours. The test value is 5 and is a left tailed test.

Conclusion-Therefore, comparing p-value with alpha (i.e. 0.022/2 = 0.011 with alpha =0.05) we
choose to reject the Null hypothesis. This implies that students are willing to attend Ensemble
even if the travel time by train is more than 5 hours. This result is surprising since most of the
marketing done by Ensemble team is done in nearby colleges and participation is not expected
from colleges farther away.
o H2: If it takes more than 25 hours, students will not take the pain to attend Ensemble
Alternate Hypothesis (H2a) : Students will want to travel to attend Ensemble only if the travel
time by train is less than 25 hours
Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students how many hours they are willing to travel from
their own campuses to attend Ensemble. We want to ascertain if they are inclined to attend the
fest even if the travel time is more than 25 hours. The test value is 25 and is a right tailed test.

choose to reject the Null hypothesis. This implies that students will not attend Ensemble if the
travel time by train is more than 25 hours. This result is obtained as expected since there is a lot of
inconvenience and no incentive for students to travel by train for 25 hours to participate in
Ensemble.
Research Question 2: Does the pro-shows of artists attract other B-School students to
Ensemble?
BRM Project Group-3
20 | P a g e
o H3: Popularity of the artist will garner more participation in the overall fest
Alternate Hypothesis (H6a): Popularity of the artist does not affect participation in the
fest
o H4: International artists relate better with B-School students, increasing participation.
Alternate Hypothesis (H8a): International artists do not relate better with B-School
students, increasing participation.
o H5: If the flagship event is Rock-show by established bands, participation increases.
Alternate Hypothesis (H9a): Rock-show by established brands does not affect the
participation of students.

International celebrity or a Bollywood actor students would be willing to attend the event. Hence
we fail to reject the Null hypothesis H8 & H9 However, we can reject H6 since not all types of
pro-shows by popular artists affect the participation.

Conclusion: Since the p-value is more than the alpha value of 0.05, we fail to reject the null
hypothesis. Hence the students will participate in an event only if there is direct bus or train service to
Jamshedpur. This highlights the need for direct connectivity for increasing participation in fests held
in cities far from one’s college.
 Research Question 4: What factor is the most important and least important which
influence other B-School students to participate in Ensemble?
o H9: All factors which influence other B-School Students are equal
Alternate Hypothesis (H1a): Other B-School Students rate factors differently
Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students to rank different factors on a scale of 1-3 (Top 3
factors) and rest factors as 4. Different factors to be ranked were time to reach XLRI, pro-
Show/Star Night, Other events during ensemble, Recreational activities/Sightseeing in

Conclusion- Therefore, comparing p-value with alpha (i.e. 0.000 with alpha =0.05) we choose to

results, we observe that students rate Prize money as the most important factor (Mean rank of 2.41)
while considering their participation. The next two most important factors are travel time (Mean rank
of 2.93) and travel location (Mean rank of 4.28).
 Research Question 5: What are the demographic factors which influence participation

have.
Research Problem 2
What are the multiple factors that increases participation of XLRI students in Ensemble?
 Research Question 1: Do the dates of Ensemble affect the participation of XLers in

Conclusion: Since the p-value is less than the alpha value of 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis.
Hence the students will participate in an event even if their friends are not participating. This is

ppo_fest Yes 1.00 38 1.0 .6 .999a
No 2.00 2 .1

Conclusion: Since the p-value is greater than the alpha value of 0.05, we fail to reject the
null hypothesis. Hence the students will participate in an event when a PPO/PPI is on offer to
the winner. This clearly shows that students value a PPO/PPI very much and chances of
participation are high with a PPO/PPI on offer.
 Research Question 2: Does previous year participation in events affect the current year’s
participation?
o H19: If a B-School team won an event in the previous year, the B-school will participate.
Alternate Hypothesis (H30a): Participation would not be affected by the previous
year results
Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students whether they will participate if your B-
School team won the event the previous year.

Conclusion: Since the p-value is greater than the alpha value of 0.05, we fail to reject the null
hypothesis. Hence if their B school team won the event the previous year, chances of their
participation would increase since the students would have first-hand information about how
their seniors were able to crack the competition and thus prepare accordingly.
o H20: Decision of students to participate will be affected by participation of top 3 B-Schools (IIM
A, B, C) in the previous years.
o Alternate Hypothesis (H1a): Past participation of IIM A, B or C does not affect participation
from other colleges.
Procedure- We asked the Non- XLRI students past participation of which B-Schools will affect
their decision to participate in Ensemble. We ran separate tests on the three options. Here 2
represents the case where participation of a particular b-School does not affect the participation of
a student in a management fest.

Alternative hypothesis states that the proportion of cases in the first group < .4.
Conclusion-Here we observe that we fail to reject the null hypothesis in all three cases. Hence we
can say that participation of students is not affected by participation of any of the top 3 B-Schools.
 Research Question 3: Does the structure of events affect participation?
o H21(For Non XL students): If the event has more than 1 preliminary rounds, Students
will not participate.
Alternate Hypothesis (H33a) : Non XL students will participate in Ensemble even if the
event has more than 1 preliminary events
Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students what is the minimum number of
preliminary rounds they are willing to undertake in order to participate in events of
Ensemble. The test value is 1 and is a right tailed test.

Conclusion-By observing and comparing p-value with alpha (i.e. 0.000/2 = 0.000 with alpha =0.05)
we reject the null hypothesis. This proves that even if the number of preliminary events is more than
1, the non-XL students will be willing to participate. This result is important so for optimal structuring
of events.
 Research Question 3: Does the structure of events affect participation?
o H21(For XL Students): If the event has more than 1 preliminary rounds, Students will
not participate.

we reject the null hypothesis. This proves that even if the number of preliminary events is more than
1, the XL students will be willing to participate. This result is important so for optimal structuring of
events.
 Research Question 4: Does the presence of known personalities as judges affect
participation?
o H22: If the judge is a CXO from a known organization, students will participate.
Alternate Hypothesis (H34a): If the judge is a CXO students will not participate.
Procedure- We asked the students which type of judges would attaract them to participate in
an event.

Conclusion – From the above statistics, we can see that the P-Value for CXO judges is 0.13
which is greater than an alpha threshold value of .05. Hence we fail to reject the null hypothesis in
this case and we can say that CXO judges will attract more participation from students from all B-
Schools.
 Research Question 5: What is the role of the sponsors’ brand in student participation?
o H23: If reputed companies are sponsoring the event students will participate.
Alternate Hypothesis (H35a) : Student participation does not depend upon sponsorship
by reputed companies.
Procedure- We asked the respondents if they would be interested to participate in an
event if any of the mentioned reputed brand is sponsoring the competition.

  • 3. BRM Project Group-3 2 | P a g e Executive Summary Objective The objective of this research project is to understand the factors that affect the footfall that XLRI receives during the time of the annual management festival - Ensemble. Our research problem focuses on the responses that these kind of fests receive from both within as well as outside the college. The results would help us to find the reasons why people avoid these fests and thus provide solutions to attract them to attend the various events held during the other fests also. Research Methodology After defining the main decision problem, we have further identified 3 broad research problems in which we have defined research questions with defined set of hypothesis. To gauge the effectiveness of these hypothesis, a set of questions have been developed to get answers regarding these research questions, the data set of which would be then analysed further to arrive at a solution for our main decision problem. Conclusion The findings of this research would enable the organizers to create and design the events in the fests in such a manner that they attract much more of the crowd than they currently do. A higher participation would ensure higher revenues and thus a successful fest.
  • 4. BRM Project Group-3 3 | P a g e Introduction Xavier’s School of Management was established in 1949 and has been one of the top management institutes since then. The college is situated in about 40 acres of land in Jamshedpur, the steel city in Jharkhand. It offers full time programs to about 1000 students, spread across several categories of management. Since the exhaustive curriculum of these programs mandates the students to live in the residences on the campus, extracurricular activities are an integral part of their lives which gives rise to several events that occur round the year as part of college festivals or ‘fests’. These fests also invite participation from other MBA schools across India besides the local crowd of Jamshedpur. Some of the major festivals that occur throughout the year have been mentioned below: 1) Valhalla Valhalla is a sports and cultural fest that is held usually during the last weekend of July. The fest invites participation primarily from other premier business schools across India in an array of sports and cultural events. There are 7 sports that are played in the round robin format, with each culminating in a final. Apart from this, the cultural part of the festival includes competitions across dramatics, quizzes, singing and dancing. It also includes professional performances or ‘ProShows’, where famous groups or individuals are called to perform. In total the fest organizes about 50 events, and generates a footfall of about 3000 people. 2) Ensemble Ensemble is the premier management fest of XLRI. Launched in 2001, it has attracted participation from several business schools across the country. The fest primarily focuses on co-curricular competitions spread across different formats like debating, case studies, quizzes etc. Over the last few years the competition has focused on specific ideas around which the entire fest is then built. The fest offers a very high prize money to the winners and the runners up across its several competitions. The fest is held around mid-November culminating in a grand proshow. 3) XL UTSAV XL UTSAV is an event conducted by Acadcom to bridge the gap between students and faculties and a step in many to help us imbibe the famous XL Culture. It combines various facets like sports, cultural performances and regional flavours to make it a memorable day in the life of an XLer. The day kicks off with faculty and students facing each other off in a number of sporting events. We see healthy competition between the two and little bit of banter thrown around. In the evening a mini India descends on the grounds of XLRI as various regional committees set up food stalls offering regional lip smacking regional delicacies. The night caps off with a cultural performance from both students and faculties which adds the icing on the cake. It is one day where the faculty lets their hair down and soaks in the atmosphere that the event manages to create. 4) XL-IIMC What started as a sports fest to bridge the gap between the 2 elite institutions in the region has now completely transformed into the most heated and intense rivalry that any 2 institutes can possibly share. An event conducted by SportsCom, the popularity of the event can be gauged
  • 5. BRM Project Group-3 4 | P a g e from the fact that the first question alumni of either institutes ask upon meeting is that who is winning the XL-IIMC meet these days. It is considered the mother of all B school sports fests as the 2 teams battle it out on a wide variety of sporting events like athletics, chess, football, pool etc. The event is just not limited to action on the field as what transpires off it also plays a crucial role in deciding the fortunes of the teams. Sledging is a weapon used by either teams’ continent to unsettle the nerves of the players and push them towards making mistakes. It is one event where the entire batch comes together against a common foe and passions run at extremely high levels. The overall score of the meet stands at 37-9 in favour of IIMC. However, XLRI has been making up lost ground by winning the last 3 meets that were held. A legacy that binds XLers of all ages, it is one event that is bookmarked in the calendars’ of possibly every Xler and pushes them to give more than 100 percent on and off the field. 5) TedX TED is a non-profit organisation which devotes itself to spreading ideas in the form of short talks by eminent speakers. It started off in 1984 where speakers of Technology, Entertainment and Design converged under the same roof to discuss and propagate their ideas. Today it encompasses almost all topics ranging from science to global issues and is now a global community. TEDx is a concept used by TED to spread their innovative where x stands for an independent event. So this year’s TEDxXLRI had 8 eminent speakers (Rasika Shekhar, Anand Pillai, Rajiv Jayaraman etc.) from diverse backgrounds. Rasia Shekhar even enchanted the crowd by delivering a magical performance that left many spellbound and asking for more. An event organised by CII-YI XLRI, it is an event where people are stimulated by the powerful talks and are sometimes pushed to introspect. TedxXLRI is at a nascent stage as this was the 3rd edition of the event. An event that is anticipated by many on the campus, the event is only going to get bigger and better. 6) Maxi Fair MAXI Fair is a unique concept and perhaps the most distinctive and renowned fest in XLRI. Conducted by the Marketing Association of XLRI (MAXI), it is the largest marketing event conducted by a student body in the country. The concept of a marketing research event disguised as a fair open to the general public to gather massive amounts of marketing research data has been very well received by the corporate sector and academicians alike. It was introduced by Prof Sharad Sarin in 1979, and has been emulated in other B-schools such as IIM-A, IIM-L and University of Rhode Island. The fair operates with a myriad of attractions, popular entertainment and fun events, just like any other fest, and attracts a massive footfall from the Jamshedpur public. However the elements of disguised marketing research are employed by the stalls and events, which indirectly incorporate actual research questions. This prompts unbiased responses and that too by a large strata of the Jamshedpur public. This is a unique and irreplaceable source of research for a lot of companies because of the unbiased nature of data collection from the third party, namely MAXI. This valuable data has been analyzed and implemented by a lot of companies such as HUL, Nestle, RB, Pepsi etc. in either changing their product message, packaging etc. or introducing entirely new segments, such as Nestea.
  • 6. BRM Project Group-3 5 | P a g e Research Framework Research Proposal Most of the fests mentioned above require involvement of some specific colleges or local crowds. However Ensemble is the only fest that can have participation from any number of colleges. Thus our survey would try and work out the issues surrounding the primary annual fest of XLRI, giving us our Management Decision Problem (MDP): “How can we increase participation in XLRI’s annual management festival - Ensemble?” Research Objectives We have identified 3 major research problems and corresponding hypothesis to address the problem at hand. They have been mentioned below. Research Problem 1: What are the different factors that influence other B-School students to attend Ensemble?  Research Question 1: Does the participation of other B-school students depend upon the time it takes by train for the outside students to reach XLRI, Jamshedpur? o H1: If it takes less than 5 hours, students travel to attend Ensemble o H2: If it takes more than 25 hours, students will not take the pain to attend Ensemble  Research Question 2: Does the pro-shows of artists attract other B-School students to Ensemble? o H3: Popularity of the artist will garner more participation in the overall fest o H4: International artists relate better with B-School students, increasing participation. o H5: If the flagship event is Rock-show by established bands, participation increases. o H6: Exclusivity of the performance of the artist in comparison to other places will increase the participation  Research Question 3: Does the location of XLRI discourage participation from other B- School students? o H7: If Jamshedpur offers recreational options relevant to B-School Students, participation will increase o H8: Direct connectivity between B-School cities & Jamshedpur increases participation in events  Research Question 4: What factor is the most important and least important which influence other B-School students to participate in Ensemble? o H9: All factors which influence other B-School Students are equal  Research Question 5: What are the demographic factors which influence participation in Ensemble?
  • 7. BRM Project Group-3 6 | P a g e o H10: A girl will attend Ensemble only if some other girl from the same B-School will participate. Research Problem 2 What are the multiple factors that increases participation of XLRI students in Ensemble?  Research Question 1: Do the dates of Ensemble affect the participation of XLers in Ensemble? o H11: If Ensemble is held during major Indian religious festivals, students will chose to go home rather than participate in events. o H12: If the student has a submission within 2 days of end of Ensemble, he/she will not participate.  Research Question 2: Do XLers choose to participate in events on the basis of their friends’ participation? o H13: XLers will choose to participate if their friends are also participating in same/other events of Ensemble. Research Problem 3 What are the various characteristics of events that attract participation in Ensemble?  Research Question 1: Does the prize affect the participation? o H14: If the prize money is less than 5000, outside B-School students will not participate. o H15: If the prize money is more than 35000, outside B- school students will participate. o H16: If the prize money is less than 3000 XLRI students will not participate. o H17: If the prize money is more than 7000, XLRI students will participate. o H18: If the winners get a PPO/PPI, the students will participate.  Research Question 2: Does previous year participation in events affect the current year’s participation? o H19: If a B-School team won an event in the previous year, the B-school will participate. o H20: If IIM A, B, C participated last year, then other B-School.  Research Question 3: Does the structure of events affect participation? o H21: If the event has more than 1 preliminary rounds, Students will not participate.  Research Question 4: Does the presence of known personalities as judges affect participation? o H22: If the judge is a CXO from a known organization, students will participate.
  • 8. BRM Project Group-3 7 | P a g e  Research Question 5: What is the role of the sponsors’ brand in student participation? o H23: If the reputed brands are sponsoring the event, students will participate. Research Methodology Literature Survey Our hypothesis focuses on identifying the following factors which influence the decision of a student (both XL and Non XL) to attend the fest: 1) Accessibility to Jamshedpur: The distance between the persons college and Jamshedpur and the availability of direct and convenient means of transport to Jamshedpur plays an important role in deciding whether to participate in the fest or not. 2) Dates of fest: Whether the dates of Ensemble lie close to that of any important festival or around the exam schedule of the student’s college or around any other important B school fest. 3) Format of the fest: This includes the type of competitions involved in the fest, their pattern (i.e. number of preliminary rounds, number of judges and their credentials, sponsors, prize money etc.) and type and scale of proshow being conducted. 4) Participation from other B-schools: Involvement of students from top B-schools in different competitions plays an important part. Also the previous year’s winners and participation from a student’s college will also affect his/her decision to attend the fest or not. Preliminary Research As part of the preliminary research, we conducted in-depth interviews with the current and previous conveners of ensemble in order to understand the factors which might be affecting the decisions of students with respect to attending Ensemble. We also conducted interviews with few students from XLRI, IIM A, IIM C, SIBM & IIFT. Based on these interviews, we found out the following variables that affect the participation of students. Variable Parameters Location Distance, Connectivity, Travelling Alone or in a group, Recreational activities in Jamshedpur Flagship events Prizes, Sponsors, Judges, preliminary rounds, Other B-schools Participating Other events Proshows, extra-curricular events Schedule Clash with religious festivals, Own b-school fests, Other Top B-School Fests Past Experience Winners in previous year, Not selected in preliminary rounds the previous year.

  • 13. BRM Project Group-3 12 | P a g e 22B (ONLY FOR FEMALE RESPONDENTS) - If there are no other female participants from your college, will you be willing to participate in ensemble? Yes, no H10 CONCLUSION The objective of the research was to determine how to increase the participation in XLRI’s annual management festival – Ensemble. We first identified the research problem associated with our MDP and developed hypothesis against which we would be checking our data. We had also identified various variables which were crucial in event management of Ensemble and played important role in the minds of our audience as perception variables. Afterwards, using the hypothesis we developed a questionnaire to gather responses which we analyzed to accept/reject the hypothesis formulated earlier. We broadly classified the variables to be tested as follows: Locational factors, Flagship events, other events, schedule and past experience of the festival. Some of the finer factors tested through these variables are distance, connectivity, travelling contexts, recreational activities in the location, prizes, sponsors, judges, preliminary rounds, proshows, clash with important dates. The questionnaire was floated amongst students from various colleges including XLRI, who had attended or had knowledge about Ensemble. We received 75 responses and there on we went forward with cleaning the data & deciding various tests to analyze the data and also to generate outputs in order to accept/reject hypothesis and decide on the significance of variables. Broadly, we found that outside B-School students rated prize money as the most important factor followed by time taken to travel and travel location. Pro-show does not matter that much for outside students while considering their participation in Ensemble. However, for XLRI Students, prize money & number of preliminary rounds are not a big factor to be considered.

This implies that students are willing to attend Ensemble even if the travel time by train is more than 5 hours. This result is surprising since most of the marketing done by Ensemble team is done in nearby colleges and participation is not expected from colleges farther away. o H2: If it takes more than 25 hours, students will not take the pain to attend Ensemble Alternate Hypothesis (H2a) : Students will want to travel to attend Ensemble only if the travel time by train is less than 25 hours Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students how many hours they are willing to travel from their own campuses to attend Ensemble. This result is obtained as expected since there is a lot of inconvenience and no incentive for students to travel by train for 25 hours to participate in Ensemble. Research Question 2: Does the pro-shows of artists attract other B-School students to Ensemble?

The result obtained is as expected since the effort required for XL students to participate in the events is low, so is the incentive. o H17: If the prize money is more than 7000, XLRI students will participate. Alternate Hypothesis (H28a) : XL students will participate in Ensemble if the prize money is greater than Rs. 7000 Procedure- We asked the XLRI students what is the minimum prize money of the event they expect which will make them want to attend Ensemble. Here, we want to check that if the prize money is more than 7000, is it incentive for them to participate in Ensemble or not. The test value is 7000 and is a right tailed test. This proves that even if the prize money of the event is less than Rs. 7000, then the students will participate in Ensemble. This result is as per our expectation since XLRI students feel incentivised enough. o H18: If the winners get a PPO/PPI, the students will participate.  Alternate Hypothesis (H26a) : Participation does not matter even if the winners get a PPO/PPI  Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students whether they will participate if the winner is offered a PPO/PPI  Test Used- Binomial test Binomial Test Category N Observed Prop. Test Prop. Asymp. Sig. Hence the students will participate in an event when a PPO/PPI is on offer to the winner. This clearly shows that students value a PPO/PPI very much and chances of participation are high with a PPO/PPI on offer.  Research Question 2: Does previous year participation in events affect the current year’s participation? o H19: If a B-School team won an event in the previous year, the B-school will participate. Alternate Hypothesis (H30a): Participation would not be affected by the previous year results Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students whether they will participate if your B- School team won the event the previous year. Hence if their B school team won the event the previous year, chances of their participation would increase since the students would have first-hand information about how their seniors were able to crack the competition and thus prepare accordingly. o H20: Decision of students to participate will be affected by participation of top 3 B-Schools (IIM A, B, C) in the previous years. o Alternate Hypothesis (H1a): Past participation of IIM A, B or C does not affect participation from other colleges. Procedure- We asked the Non- XLRI students past participation of which B-Schools will affect their decision to participate in Ensemble. We ran separate tests on the three options. Here 2 represents the case where participation of a particular b-School does not affect the participation of a student in a management fest. Alternate Hypothesis (H33a) : Non XL students will participate in Ensemble even if the event has more than 1 preliminary events Procedure- We asked the non-XLRI students what is the minimum number of preliminary rounds they are willing to undertake in order to participate in events of Ensemble.
