Love and kindness can change a Monster or bully into a
friend, but not all monsters or bullies want to change.
Sometimes it’s best to avoid Monsters and bullies if you can.

The boy had been put to bed, but he could not go to sleep. As
he lay in bed in the dark, in the silence, he thought he heard a
noise. Then again he heard it.

The noise was a growl coming from under the bed.
Grrrrrrrrrrr. “Don’t do dee actions,” said a shakey voice from
someone listening to this story.

Then without further delay, the Monster appeared peeking
over the side of the bed.

The boy was so frightened, he pulled his blanket and sheet
over his head, but he became so curious that he peeked out to
see the Monster who stood beside the bed.

He had large green eyes with red veins and a large head
covered with long dark blue hair. And he was tall and had fat
blue fingers with stubby claws.

Then fear changed to hope when the boy remembered
something his father said, and so the boy looked up at the
Monster and said, "I love you and forgive you if you want me
to."

Tears began to fill up the Monster's eyelids and then big tear
drops began to roll down his cheeks, over his belly, and
splash onto the floor. As he cried, the Monster said, "Nobody
ever said that to me before. I am so sorry I scared you."

The Monster sobbed loudly, and the boy said, "I forgive you.
Do you want to be my friend?" The Monster nodded as he
wiped away more tears that also splashed onto the floor.

The Monster smiled and said, "Nobody ever wanted to be my
friend before." He felt so happy that the boy wanted to be his
friend because the Monster had been lonely for too long.

The Monster said as he cried, "I don't want to hurt or scare
people anymore. How can I stop scaring people?"

“Maybe you could join a Monster Support Group of other
Monsters who want to learn to be kind and not hurt or scare
people anymore,” said the boy.

"I am so afraid of going back to scaring little boys by
growling under their beds at night," said the Monster.

The boy said, "That's the same thing other Monsters want: to
stop growling under children's beds at night."

The Monster smiled, but his long sharp yellow teeth were
showing.

It helps you to change something in yourself when a group of
people who have a similar problem, encourage you to
change, instead of your trying to do it alone. Not all
Monsters want to change.

About the Author
Daniel Keeran is a counsellor who lives in Victoria, BC with
his wife of 39 years as of July 2015. Their daughter is
Phoebe who is married to a nice young man, and they also
live in the city.
