The theory of emotional intelligence emerged in the 1990s as a response to traditional IQ testing, which focused only on cognitive abilities. John Mayer and Peter Salovey introduced the concept of emotional intelligence. Their main models of emotional intelligence include self-awareness, managing emotions, self-motivation, empathy, and interpersonal relationship skills. Practical applications in education include using drama to develop emotional skills, learning to manage one's own emotions and the emotions of others.
