2. Survey Questions
1. Should the Federal government increase funding for research on renewable
energy by $500 billion? Yes or No
2. Should the Federal government shift funding from other areas to increase
funding for research on renewable energy by $500 billion? Yes or No
3. Should the Federal government raise tax revenue by $500 billion taxes to
increase funding for research on renewable energy? Yes or No
4. Should the Federal government increase the deficit by $500 billion to
increase funding for research on renewable energy? Yes or No
3. DV & Key Hypotheses
Dependent variable:
Positive, or “Yes”, responses
Hypotheses:
1. The ‘shift funding’ and ‘increase funding’ framing effects should yield a higher % of ‘Yes’
responses
2. Responses will not vary significantly by gender
3. Democrats will favor ‘Yes’ responses in larger proportion than Republicans
4. A higher level of education should correlate with a higher % of ‘Yes’ responses
4. Main Data and Key Insights
Framing effect # of respondents ‘Yes’ response
Increase funding 100 59%
Increase deficit 100 56%
Shift funding 94 64%
Raise taxes 116 41%
Insights/Observations
1. ‘Increase funding’ framing effect integrates the other three. Falls in between ‘increase deficit’ and ‘shift funding’
2. ‘Raise taxes’ is the framing effect that results in the least % of adept individuals. In fact, there is a significant difference
between this effect and the other three.
3. ‘Shift funding’, on the contrary, results in the framing effect with the highest % of ‘Yes’ respondents
4. Sample size is large enough to reduce random error considerably, as we will observe through some examples

Questions
Should the Federal government increase funding for research on renewable energy by $500 billion? Yes or No
Should the Federal government shift funding from other areas to increase funding for research on renewable energy by $500 billion? Yes or No
Should the Federal government raise tax revenue by $500 billion taxes to increase funding for research on renewable energy? Yes or No
Should the Federal government increase the deficit by $500 billion to increase funding for research on renewable energy? Yes or No
Hypotheses
The shift funding expression, from the 2nd question, should yield a higher % of ‘Yes’ responses
It has a “less” negative or “more” positive connotation than the others
Responses will not vary significantly by gender
Demographic traits are randomly distributed by gender, not providing reason for significant variations
Democrats will favor ‘Yes’ responses in larger proportion than Republicans
Political biases may play a role in the framing of these questions
A higher level of education should correlate with a higher % of ‘Yes’ responses
Higher level of education achieved could translate to more exposure to academic papers, theories, and opinions that support renewable energy funding
