How students experience search results

Editor's Notes

  1. Differences between browsing and searching. Students struggle with browsing
  2. Help students understand how to refine specificity. Practice with known hierarchies, practice with online tools, practice verbally.
  3. Reference commonsensemedia.org lesson “key to keywords” – “Fetch!” activities, try searching using one keyword, two keywords, three keywords. Descriptive, accurate, precise.
  4. Students won’t persist to get beyond these obstacles without motivation
  5. Librarian IN the classroom 1-2x before library visit. Teacher engaged during library visit. Be on the same page.

  7. Students often have the research and outline stages flipped. They need YOUR help switching them back so that the research stage doesn’t include so many obstacles. Presearch is like the Guided Inquiry Open, Immerse, and Explore stages…understanding background info.
