It's still fashionable in Web developer circles to dismiss Java the language, but its not going anywhere, and the JVM as we know it goes from strength to strength. In this talk James Governor will look to put the return of Java into context, with both stories, and quantitative data.

This presentation was given at Magnolia Conference 2013 by Matteo Pelucco, Senior Software Engineer at Tinext: http://www.tinext.com. Matteo Pelucco presents a custom app developed specifically for Magnolia 5 that integrates social sharing features directly within the CMS. Thanks to a custom dashboard of the Social Media Hub, an editor can select content and share it over selected social networks accounts in a few clicks. The dashboard also keeps track of shared contents and presents insights. The app is a purely native in Magnolia 5's new AdminCentral UI and uses a customized UI based on Twitter Bootstrap. Some of the main features of the app: - Posting on multiple Twitter accounts or Facebook pages - Manual or automatic content sharing - Multilanguage support - URL shortening via Google service (other services are pluggable) - Automatic hash-tagging Sharing history Stats and insights (trends, like count, mentions, retweets) Community Edition based, portable to Enterprise Edition

Do you work for the man, are they treating you right, and how are smart companies scaling, while still showing empathy for the end user- the developer.

A Tale of Two ITs. Tech, Power, Responsibility

It's a cliche to say it's the best time in history to be a software developer. We have so much capability at our disposal and we don't need to ask for permission any more. The technology landscape, and the world at large, is changing faster than ever - parts of the stack are well defined, but innovating on top of that will creates new challenges. In this talk RedMonk I outline developer trends, directions, and choices, as cloud native technologies and approaches become ubiquitous. Kubernetes won - so now what? We examine adoption trends around containers and associated technology including service meshes, but also consider the role of serverless technology in a container native world. New stacks are enabling progressive deployment, but we need approaches such as chaos engineering, creating resilience by designing for failure. While it's true that developers are the new kingmakers, with great power comes great responsibility. Are developers ready for that responsibility? We'll need new ethical frameworks to make better, more socially responsible choices. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
