2. THE CHALLENGE
With less viable sites to bury domestic waste,
diverting waste from landfill in a sustainable
way has become an increasing issue for 11
councils in the north and west ofMelbourne.

3. THE SOLUTION
A new organic green waste facility at Bulla,
about 30 kilometres from Melbourne, that
uses state-of-the-art Australian technology
to turn thousands of tonnes of green waste
into high-grade compost foragriculture.
It processes on average about 85,000
tonnes of green waste every year,including
bush trimmings, lawn clippings and small
treeparts.

4. HOW WE DO IT
Using technology developed by Veolia and its partners, kerbside
garden organics are pre-sorted to remove contaminants and then
shredded to a suitable size for composting. Theshredded materials
are enclosed in concrete vessels, with plenum floor and undergo an
intensive composting process under controlled conditions where
oxygen content, temperature, air-flows and pressures are controlled
by a computer based management system.
A controlled aerobic and thermophilic biological transformation
achieves pasteurization and destroys pathogens and weed seeds.
Theaerobic facility generates no methane (as apposed to traditional
landfill) and turns green waste into useful high-grade compost.
