Moving Past Infrastructure Limitations: Data Warehousing at MediaMath Over the past year and a half, MediaMath has undertaken a “data liberation” effort in an attempt to leave their bigbox, monolithic data warehouse behind. In this talk, Rory Sawyer, Software Engineer at MediaMath, will describe how this effort transformed MediaMath’s legacy architecture and legacy mindset, which imposed harsh inefficiencies on data sharing and utilization. The current mindset removes these inefficiencies and allows them to say “yes” to more projects and ideas. Rory will also demo how MediaMath uses Amazon Web Services and Qubole so that infrastructure is no longer a limiting factor on what and how users query. This combination allows them to scale their resources up and down as needed while bridging different data sources and execution engines. Using and extending MediaMath’s data warehousing is no longer a privileged activity but an ability that every employee and client has.

Open source software is taking the computer science community and IT departments by storm. The breadth of options, the timeliness of updates, the price, and the sense of community are all contributing factors to the rise of open source computing. For many years audit analytics has been confined to the Computer Assisted Auditing Techniques, CAAT, software vendors ACL, IDEA and now Arbutus. However, these software programs require extensive training to use effectively, are not very flexible, and in most cases fail to provide the outcome auditors are expecting. Moving to an open source platform based around the python ecosystem allows for true customization of analytics, and provides a common language to interact with your IT department. By using the same set of tools, an auditing department can move from rudimentary AP duplicate tests all the way to advanced classification and clustering machine learning tests. Although the barrier to entry for open source software is higher than for most CAATs, with cross-functional collaboration, a truly customized, sustainable, and highly effective analytics program can be created.

This talk will give an overview of the platform and its underlying protocol, and illustrate how it can be used to build privacy preserving apps and Internet connected things. It will also cover how the platform can be self hosted on devices like the Raspberry Pi, and how people can get involved in the open source community growing around it.

Better languages and frameworks have already brought substantial improvements in memory safety, eliminating whole classes of vulnerabilities caused by buffer overflows.Yet despite a major reshuffle in 2021, the OWASP top 10 remains full of things that boil down to a lack of input validation. An issue that has bedevilled tech since its inception. We're all told that we shouldn't trust the input to our programs, and that validation is our best defence. But developers get precious little help on that front from today's languages and frameworks; something that can and should change. This talk will examine a hypothetical evolution of TypeScript - ValidScript, to consider a future where input validation is baked in.
