Advances in technology has given consumers unlimited
access to information, demand products, and services
when they want. Customers and consumers can now
interact and communicate with brands and other
consumers using social media platforms. Technology
has changed how we connect. We have multiple digital
devices, including mobile and wearables that keeps us
connected 24/7. With increases in internet speed,
product variety and services, consumers expectations
are at an all time high (The Keenfolks, n.d).

Stats from Datareportal (2022) shows mobile phones are the most used digital device globally. A report by
Broadband Search (2022) says 55.9% of the time spent on websites is with a desktop. Many websites are
designed with desktops in mind, and users want the better internet speed.

The most popular online purchases in Europe from a 2021 report by Eurostat (2022). The fashion industry is
leading online sales. Among one of the reasons is personalised email marketing strategies, and sales or
discount offerings. Also, mobile technology in fashion ecommerce, allows apps to send notifications to the
user i.e. for incomplete shopping carts (SaleCycle, 2022).

Another huge online business market is food
Delivery Apps. This is a 2021 report of the
revenue by country (Curry, 2022). Digital orders,
via a mobile app or Internet have grown 23%
over the past 4 years. What is concerning is
overweight and obesity is a persisting epidemic
in both paediatrics and adults in the US. The
convenience of these food ordering
applications may present a greater risk to
health, especially among the overweight or
obese individuals (NCBI, 2020).

More than 80% of traffic online is video traffic,
as the content people want has changed from
text to images to videos and now livestreams.
More than 3 billion people are online today
compared to 1 billion in 2005. Today is the age
of video. Viewers want content that’s visual and
storytelling.

The number of consumers shopping and banking online is
increasing every year. In 2021 a total of 17, 219 stores in Great
Britain closed; compared to 15, 304 in 2018 (PWC, 2022).
Banks and building societies have closed (or scheduled the
closure) of 5,182 branches since January 2015 (Which, 2022).
Customers like to shop online as there are a huge range of
products online that they can select from 24/7 (Prajapati, V.
2021). Many of these products can be found on one platform
such as Amazon, which also offers cheaper used products.
However, nearly 80% of consumers prefer omnichannel
strategies (Scovhoj, F. 2022).
13
Social commerce buyers are
increasing year by year. Chen
(2022) reports, in 2019 there
were 60.6m US buyers, this
has now increased to 97.2m
in 2022.
The creator economy is
continuing to mature, with 50
million or more people world
wide who consider themselves
creators (Chen, 2022).
Consumers are more likely to watch a
video until the end if it’s <2 mins.
Due to the rise in popularity of Tik
Tok and Instagram, short-form video
is a social media trend in 2022 (Chen,
2022).
Live streaming is available on all major
social media apps. 1 in 5 videos on
Facebook is being broadcast live. This
allows marketers to hold webinars, host
tutorials, and collaborations (Dimovski,
2022).
SOCIAL
MEDIA
TRENDS
14
Consumers now rely on technology to carry out a variety of different processes and functions. Mobile phones have evolved
into smart phones that consumers now use for shopping, and many other activities. With this and 5G’s extremely fast
processing speeds, consumers are in demand. When we purchase we want quality, simplicity, and speed. With so many
products to choose from, it’s never been more important for marketers to build a strong brand, find a niche, and have
products with a compelling USP. Video is king of the internet, as it’s consumers favourite way shop, learn, and entertain
themselves. Creators are using video to teach and engage with their consumer audience on social media. Mass video
consumption keeps us connected to people globally, but can disconnect us from the people right in front of us. Consumers
are in control like never before, we just need to use technology responsibly.
