Jets are able to fly fast because jet engines produce tremendous thrust that moves air over the wings at great speed, generating lift and allowing the plane to fly. Jet engines work by compressing air, mixing it with fuel, igniting it to produce hot gases, and expelling these gases out the back at high velocity, which pushes the plane forward very quickly. This thrust and airflow enable jets to achieve much higher speeds than propeller-driven planes.
