This document discusses measuring distances between various beaches and landmarks in Oregon using different units of measurement. 2. This is Devil’s Churn near
Lincoln City. There is a
staircase that leads you
down to the last safe spot
of the cove. Suppose you
were a daredevil and did
not want to use the stairs,
instead you wanted to
repel yourself straight
down into the cove using
a rope. Measure how
much rope you would
need to make it to the
bottom using inches, feet,
yards and miles. After
measuring, decide which
measurement would be
most useful for this
situation.

3. This is Squaw Island near Charleston.
Right now we are standing right up
against the cliff that we climbed down
to get to this beach. We want to walk
out to the island, but need to know
what distance we are going to have to
walk, round trip, in order to not get
caught by high tide. Measure the
distance (round trip) in inches, feet,
yards, and miles. After measuring,
decide which measurement is going to
be most useful for this situation.

4. This is the South Cove of Simpson Reef,
also by Charleston. We want to hike from
Squaw Island to this cove, but we need to
know the distance we have to walk, in
order to know where to stop for lunch.
First decide which measurement is going
to be most efficient for this situation, and
then measure the distance using that
measurement tool.

5. This is Face Rock in Bandon.
At Simpson Reef, we are
going to get on the bus, and
then drive here. In order to
know how long it will take us
to get here, what unit of
measurement will we use?
(Notice the question says
how long it will take us, not
what will the distance be.)

6. This is Seven Devil’s Beach also in
Bandon. First find the distance
between Face Rock and here
using a measurement of your
choice. Then find how long it will
take us to reach this destination
if the bus was to go at a constant
rate of 30 mi/hr.
