THE CHALLENGE
Rolling out its nationwide 5G network, this operator
recognized that it needed to take an organization-wide
view of how it deployed and optimized the network.
Fundamentally, this boiled down to four core network
testing challenges that needed to be addressed:
• How could they validate new 5G site and cluster
performance before activation, so they could be
confident that the network would deliver from day 1?
• How could they know how their 5G network
compared to those of their competitors, so that they
could improve the areas where they were weaker
and communicate their competitive edge based on
real-world insight and evidence?
• How could they not only identify, but also
troubleshoot and resolve, network issues so the
customer experience didn’t suffer and lead to
increased subscriber churn?
• With all of this done, how could they get a true
measure of the customer experience so they could
be confident that the network is delivering on their
5G promise?
To successfully meet these challenges, the operator
understood that its teams couldn’t operate in silos. With
multiple stakeholders, ranging from the lab testing team
to the sales and marketing team, and from network
deployment team to the field maintenance team, the full
organization had a role to play. Each had its own specific
needs and requirements, but all must support the central
objective of providing and maintaining a 5G network that
delivers for both the business and its customers.
5G is not only transformational in terms of network performance, with improved throughput,
spectral efficiency, latency and reliability compared to previous generations of telecommunications
infrastructure, but also in how it impacts across the entire mobile operator organization.
To realize the benefits of 5G, you need to quickly rollout your network and efficiently operate it. But
with higher cell density, a larger number of spectrum options and far more sophisticated antenna
systems, the complexity of deploying and optimizing new 5G networks and sites is potentially more
time-consuming, more costly, and more of a resource drain than any previous technology.
In this case study, we look at the real-world example of a European tier 1 mobile operator that
has confronted the challenges of rolling out its nationwide 5G network using innovative network
testing solutions.

How a leading European operator
is maximizing the value from its
portfolio of TEMS™ solutions
Network testing with TEMS™
THE SOLUTIONS
As it embarked on its 5G journey, this European
operator turned to Infovista and its TEMS™ portfolio
of network testing solutions. For over 25 years, and
through multiple generations of network technology,
TEMS has been recognized as the benchmark for
network testing solutions by mobile network operators
and vendors worldwide.
Bringing together orchestration and analytics with
multi-mode network testing, Infovista provided a
comprehensive portfolio of solutions, including:
Site & feature validation
Network ‘drive’ testing remains the only way to
validate individual site and cluster performance
before activation. TEMS’ end-to-end, data-driven
approach to network testing provides the operator
with granular network analytics and insight to provide
comprehensive department and organization-wide
perspectives of the operator’s 5G network roll-out.
Initial site tuning is done using TEMS Investigation to
validate that new 5G sites and clusters are providing
the intended coverage and all voice and data services
are working as expected. Continuous testing at fixed
locations using TEMS Sense then provides a perfect
baseline to confirm network upgrades and new feature
activations have not adversely affected performance.
Using TEMS Pocket the operator verifies, optimizes and
troubleshoots the 5G network in environments requiring
portability, including indoor sites in malls, stadiums,
offices, and other large venues. With TEMS Pocket
devices mounted on drones they even test difficult-to-
reach locations like beaches – vital for inbound roaming
revenue – and industrial and agricultural sites, which are
key to their new 5G IoT offerings.
However, the operator needed an end-to-end view of
all the data and analytics gathered from across their
5G investments if they were to verify, optimize and
troubleshoot their mobile network effectively and
efficiently. This is provided by TEMS Director, a cloud-
based service that allows them to remotely control and
manage their fleet of TEMS units.
Competitor insights
Benchmarking drive and walk tests are the only way
to understand what is happening on competitor
networks – and Infovista is the benchmark solution for
benchmarking. Umlaut uses Infovista’s TEMS Paragon
for its global benchmarking campaigns. Using the same
solution as umlaut allows the operator’s engineers
to improve their network before the next umlaut
benchmarking campaign. It enables them to compare
the performance of multiple networks, bands and
technologies synchronously, and both discover and
analyze how their own network performs next to others.
Fully integrated with TEMS Director, the TEMS Paragon
benchmarking solution provides engineers with an
innovative scripting engine, remote device control
capability and turn-by-turn navigation – all of which
help them reduce operational costs and improve the
depth and quality of their results.
Root cause analysis
The information collected by TEMS allows users to
not only identify, but also to troubleshoot and resolve
network issues. To ensure their network KPIs are
exceeded and that their subscriber experience gives
them a competitive edge, the operator needed to be
able to quickly identify what issues were arising in the
network and where they were present.

TEMS Discovery is the wireless industry’s most
comprehensive network analytics and optimization
platform for mobile network performance testing. The
solution provides the operator with detailed analysis and
reporting for initial tuning and site/cluster acceptance
projects, network troubleshooting and optimization
projects, and customer complaint investigations.
Customer experience
TEMS provides a true measure of customer
experience, as data is collected directly from handsets.
The operator uses TEMS Investigation, Infovista’s
market-leading end-to-end network testing solution,
to test every new function and feature in the network.
This allows them to better understand customer
experience and to verify, optimize and troubleshoot
their mobile network. In turn, this allows the operator
to quickly access in-depth subscriber (QoE) and
network (QoS) insights in order to make better network

Network analytics from TEMS Discovery provides
detailed analysis and reporting for customer complaint
investigations. This means the operator now has

application and network level.

How a leading European operator is maximizing the value from its portfolio of TEMS™ solutions | Case Study | Infovista

  • 1. THE CHALLENGE Rolling out its nationwide 5G network, this operator recognized that it needed to take an organization-wide view of how it deployed and optimized the network. Fundamentally, this boiled down to four core network testing challenges that needed to be addressed: • How could they validate new 5G site and cluster performance before activation, so they could be confident that the network would deliver from day 1? • How could they know how their 5G network compared to those of their competitors, so that they could improve the areas where they were weaker and communicate their competitive edge based on real-world insight and evidence? • How could they not only identify, but also troubleshoot and resolve, network issues so the customer experience didn’t suffer and lead to increased subscriber churn? • With all of this done, how could they get a true measure of the customer experience so they could be confident that the network is delivering on their 5G promise? To successfully meet these challenges, the operator understood that its teams couldn’t operate in silos. With multiple stakeholders, ranging from the lab testing team to the sales and marketing team, and from network deployment team to the field maintenance team, the full organization had a role to play. Each had its own specific needs and requirements, but all must support the central objective of providing and maintaining a 5G network that delivers for both the business and its customers. 5G is not only transformational in terms of network performance, with improved throughput, spectral efficiency, latency and reliability compared to previous generations of telecommunications infrastructure, but also in how it impacts across the entire mobile operator organization. To realize the benefits of 5G, you need to quickly rollout your network and efficiently operate it. But with higher cell density, a larger number of spectrum options and far more sophisticated antenna systems, the complexity of deploying and optimizing new 5G networks and sites is potentially more time-consuming, more costly, and more of a resource drain than any previous technology. In this case study, we look at the real-world example of a European tier 1 mobile operator that has confronted the challenges of rolling out its nationwide 5G network using innovative network testing solutions.   • 2. THE SOLUTIONS As it embarked on its 5G journey, this European operator turned to Infovista and its TEMS™ portfolio of network testing solutions. For over 25 years, and through multiple generations of network technology, TEMS has been recognized as the benchmark for network testing solutions by mobile network operators and vendors worldwide. Bringing together orchestration and analytics with multi-mode network testing, Infovista provided a comprehensive portfolio of solutions, including: Site & feature validation Network ‘drive’ testing remains the only way to validate individual site and cluster performance before activation. TEMS’ end-to-end, data-driven approach to network testing provides the operator with granular network analytics and insight to provide comprehensive department and organization-wide perspectives of the operator’s 5G network roll-out. Initial site tuning is done using TEMS Investigation to validate that new 5G sites and clusters are providing the intended coverage and all voice and data services are working as expected. Continuous testing at fixed locations using TEMS Sense then provides a perfect baseline to confirm network upgrades and new feature activations have not adversely affected performance. Using TEMS Pocket the operator verifies, optimizes and troubleshoots the 5G network in environments requiring portability, including indoor sites in malls, stadiums, offices, and other large venues. With TEMS Pocket devices mounted on drones they even test difficult-to- reach locations like beaches – vital for inbound roaming revenue – and industrial and agricultural sites, which are key to their new 5G IoT offerings. However, the operator needed an end-to-end view of all the data and analytics gathered from across their 5G investments if they were to verify, optimize and troubleshoot their mobile network effectively and efficiently.
