Hot air balloons fly due to the principle of hot air rising and cold air falling. A hot air balloon has three main parts - a basket for passengers, a burner above the basket that heats the air, and an envelope that holds the heated air. Pilots control the balloon's altitude by regulating the heat in the envelope - heating the air to ascend and allowing it to cool to descend. While wind direction determines a balloon's general course, pilots can sometimes steer by flying to different wind layers above the ground.
